Title: GPU on the M.2 Adapter - much slower Hashrate
Post by: natminer on June 04, 2017, 10:23:39 PM
Hi guys,

I got 8 GPU's running (RX 580) and to get the 8th one on the motherboard I used an M.2 adapter (M.2 SSD To PCI-E Express 4X Adapter)
My motherboard (ASUS PRIME Z270-A).

This setup is working except that the GPU on the M.2 adapter is getting lower hashrates.

In the BIOS, there's a setting for 2x and 4x on the adapter, and I've tried both settings but I still have the same problem.

All my other GPUs have a hashrate of 29.2 MH/s, but the GPU on the M.2 adapter is slower than stock (22 MH/s). I've swapped the cables with another GPU to confirm the issue, it's definitely whichever GPU is on the M.2 adapter that has low hash rate and is fine otherwise.

Is this normal with M.2 adapters? If I should be getting the same hash rate I'm not sure what else to try.

Thanks

Could be bad adaptor.

On my PRIME Z270-A, I got same hashrate from all pci slots and M.2.

As already said it could well be a bad adaptor. Ive run cards on the m.2 slot using bios settings of gen2 and had no issues. My m.2 adaptors are “Lattcure” branded and use a 1x pcie slot rather than just the usb connection on the board. Not sure if that makes any difference but they do seem like wuality adaptors.

Thanks

I bought a few of these:
M2. to PCI-e adapter (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Great-Q-NGFF-to-PCI-E-pci-express-Riser-Card-M-2-to-PCIe-Expansion-Card/32832366913.html?ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_3_10065_10068_10344_10342_10343_10340_10341_10084_10083_10618_10307_10615_10313_10059_10534_100031_10103_441_10624_442_10623_10622_10621_10620_10142,searchweb201603_25,ppcSwitch_5&algo_expid=4f264480-151c-48de-abcf-d330b5479edf-5&algo_pvid=4f264480-151c-48de-abcf-d330b5479edf&priceBeautifyAB=0)

Each and every adapter worked great and I think it is a good solution going ahead.

I had recently similar problem. My problem was that I had the rig with 7 GPU for quite some time and then I plugged 8th one. After ton's of experiments one of the major problems was that I did not switch drivers to compute on the 8th card.
Other common problems are:
missing GEN 2 settings in bios
pins not well aligned on M2 card - fix by reconciling M2 several times
Make sure you use latest BIOS - Asus recently released updated bios with some M2 improvements

good luck ;)
