Title: How much effect does this forum have on Bitcoin?
Post by: uMMcQxCWELNzkt on May 04, 2013, 05:06:08 PM
As Bitcointalk to my knowlege is the most popular Bitcoin related forum on the web I expect many new Bitcoin users pass through the forums in order to get a better understanding of the currency. I am curious how much speculation, rumors and so on effect Bitcoins value. If for example an overwhelming number of posts project a negative outlook towards Bitcoin, will that start to drive prices down? I realize China and other markets also play a big part in Bitcoin but as the main English forum I thought this is an interesting question.

Personally I hope I am just being paranoid but it seems as though a large proportion of members here are more interested in creating chaos in order buy cheaper regardless of the long term damage such actions might cause. Please do not focus on this perspective though, I am just curious whether the forums have impact both short/long term on Bitcoin as a whole.

I'd say about half of the short term rallies can be attributed to this forum.

I'd say most of the wealthiest bitcoin buyers use this forum at the moment, so certainly a substantial effect.

nah bro, you just hang out in speculation too much.

it is a totally relevent idea that you have to make a bi-lingual forum tho. i have never seen that done to my knowledge. one could translate their posts automatically? it would certainly test the patience of all the grammer-nazis in here lol. but srsly, I want to hear from china too (large percent chinese speak some english, no?)

there's another bitcoin related forum?

Mixed opinions then, I guess I should have made a simple yes or no poll. If this forum does have influence then I think it is safe to say that influence will die down relative to growing adoption.

It doesn't have anywhere near as much influence as the bears think.

For proof, just look at ElectricMucus's post where he attributes half of the rallies to this forum.

Really, dude?  ;D ;D ;D

Almost none at all.

I think this subforum has hardly any effect, but the entire forum is probably the first source for a lot of people to get their information about Bitcoin, so this probably has some effect.

In the past I think s3052's updates had some effects on the price, today probably no significant effect.

Minimal I think.

I guess this forum helps spread all the different Bitcoin services, and helps new people to get involved. Without the forum, I would know a lot less than I would now and I have only been using it for two days.

Regards,

Martin.

It would be fun to see a forum experiment conducted where a large proportion of the forum performs a specific (minimal effect)task at a certain time just to see the results of said experiment. This could cause issues so maybe it is for the best that we explore this idea no further.  :P
