What are your thoughts on KIN, Kik messengers new token that they announced. I'm not sure how i feel about well established companies using an ICO to launch a token. Thoughts?

It's a pretty strange development indeed. My biggest concern is that only 1 trillion of the 10 trillion tokens that will exist are being sold during the ICO (source: https://steemit.com/etheruem/@nole/kin-a-crypto-by-kik (https://steemit.com/etheruem/@nole/kin-a-crypto-by-kik)). Gnosis sold 30% of its total supply and people were wary of investing in it, so seeing how much they manage to raise is going to be interesting.

Wow that is definitely different! I can see though that they would want to get it out to their current users as well so they may be holding some back for that. But true it does seem like they holding some back on purpose to create more of a demand.

Looks bad, 90% of the supply goes to the developers? This just like made a limited token edition. So, some communities are granted the early access on the token.

After that will be hitting the market. Just like GNO, Those are early investors try to make hype to the coin.
So, more people bought it with the more price.

The early investors will take a rest to the hawaii because they succeed to flipping their money.

That's interesting but I see no reason to tag a token to the app, I know if some is sending me money I'd be pissed if I had to cash out of crypto.

I could see hookers and drug dealers liking it though haha

Some links:

Whitepaper:

Seems interesting to me though of an idea. Kik has a large userbase. Why not get the kids who use it regularly to start using a coin for various transactions/in-app purchases. I see some promise in it. But that's my two cents.

KIN is one I'm looking at. I haven't formed a clear opinion yet; more research needed. One question is how will this affect the Status token? Is it a direct competitor or not?

i think there's none of ANN thread of KIN since they already have a well-publicity of their projects, but you can follow their twitters ( https://twitter.com/@kin_foundation ) or join their slacks ( http://slack.kinfoundation.com/ )

10% distribution is very low. Also I'm not entirely sure why they need a token.
It might succeed just by virtue of being Kik, but all they seem to be doing is moving Kik points onto the Eth chain.

Yes, the 10% Supply only being sold makes it a difficult pill to swallow.

But, if we flip it over and think, they have a huge % of the token to put to use to market and drive the token's usage, while other ICO's collect money from the token buyers for the same purpose !!

So in that sense, they are looking at it from a longer term picture to make it a heavily used token, and hence the very low value of each KIN too.

Some day in the future you could buy and use KIN for any of the services they can integrate on their app. But yes, they need an app and services like weChat in China or Gojek in Indonesia, pay bills, order stuff etc.

Also 10% immediate supply of only 125 Million dollars worth means it wont go to the dirt at the exchanges.

I would be believe its a good long term bet and may not give multi-x returns in the short run through.

KIN Token Sale now enters Uncapped Mode. No more cap, but the sale still open only for the 17075 registered white-list only.

So now its upto those 17k people to gobble up the remaining tokens, lets see if it gets sold out only among the white-listed people....

I bought some yesterday, lets see how it develops.

I really like the idea that there is an ICO of an established company with a proven record. I mean they are not Facebook or SnapChat but they don't need to be if they can monetize their solid user base a effective way.

So now there is still about 100k ETH worth of KIN still left, primarily because none of the outsiders can invest into it and its still open only for the white-list candidates.

The interesting thing would be to see what happens when it hits the exchanges, how would the sale of the unsold KINs impact the initial price. Still a few days to go till closure, but there is only so much the roughly 10,000 people who have already invested can invest more.
