Install the electrum wallet on your computer and import your private code (private key) into it. Since version 2.6 electrum supports importing the type of mini private key format that casascius coins use.

Release 2.6

*snip*

Support minikeys as used in Casascius coins for private key import and sweeping

Use these instructions to install electrum and import your private key into it.

Download electrum from this page and import your key into that.

https://download.electrum.org/2.7.18/

If you are running windows then download the portable version, create a new folder, and run it in that.

https://download.electrum.org/2.7.18/electrum-2.7.18-portable.exe

Use the settings shown in these screenshots.

Import your private key into the window shown below, then just keep clicking the next button on the successive screens and leave the settings at their defaults.

Afterwards electrum should sync almost immediately and show you your casascius coin's balance.

One thing to consider is that you might get more than the value of the bitcoin on it if you sell it as is. I think I saw somewhere one sold for 8000 or something.

The keys are case sensitive and care should be taken when writing down the key before redemption.

Like others have stated, you would get more for it intact and could post a link to a picture here for a free assessment.  :)

You could have more than your 1BTC in less than a week with an auction that includes a fair starting price and opportunity for people to best that offer.

Camolist is selling several 2013 brass 1BTC Casascius coins for 1.3BTC. And obviously many have gone for more than that. Camolist's coins are straight off the roll so presumably top quality for brass. Here's Camolists thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=131828.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=131828.0)

The auction and a lower price also offers some new folks to own a bitcoin and a piece of history.  You could even pay someone here to auction it off for you so you don't have to deal with the details and logistics.

And if you decide to redeem it (or have already) let us know what year and series coin you had so we can all A) see if existing tracking resources are still active, and B) know if any of our coins just got a bit more rare!
