I started using the Electrum Wallet yesterday and transferred some BTC and trying to open it today I just get the message Electrum error after entering my password. Same error when trying to restore the wallet. I'm using MacOs on a current MacBook Pro Late 16 and Electrum 2.8.2 Hope anyone can help on this issue. Sorry that's the version I have, 2.8.3 But I figured it out in the meantime how to fix, I had to completely move away the initial folder .electrum and re"install" it, then move in the Wallet. Just a question, it seems I now have a new Bitcoin address in this wallet, is this normal? It's when I check RECEIVE, right? thank you You should use a new Bitcoin address for every new incoming transaction - for privacy and security reasons. Electrum will provide you a new address automatically. A Bitcoin address creation process is as follows: Private Key --> Public Key --> Hash (Sha256+EMD160) of Public Key --> add version number before Hash (example, "1" for Bitcoin, "L" for Litecoin), add Checksum of Hash at the end, and then Base58 of the whole string = Bitcoin Address. Base58 to Public Key Hash is reversible, but Public Key Hash to Public Key is not. Therefore it protects your transaction public key (and ultimately your private key). The Public Key Hash is imbedded in the transaction information that is public on the Bitcoin Ledger (once it is incorporated into a block) - therefore, for everyone to see - it is the locking script. To spend the bitcoins associated with this locking script, you need to provide the Signature of the Public key, and the Public Key in the unlocking script - exposing your public key to the world. Since all inputs are to be spent completely, when you spent it, it is the first time your expose your public key, but who cares, since you spent all the amount anyway - which protects you. Only if you care about some pseudo anonymity and slight increase in security... There is no "rule" or "technical limitation" that prevents address re-use. If you want to use the same address over and over again then by all means do so. Understand that it is bad for your privacy but if you don't care about that then you can do it. You can see the full list of receiving addresses on the addresses tab which is hidden by default. Go to wallet menu > addresses to bring it into view. Ok thanks, didn't know this. It's not good to do so but nothing prevents him from doing so. What happens if someone sends more BTC to the address before? Will these coins be on this address but I can't get these? As I've already said above you can continue to use any and all receiving addresses in your wallet as many times as you like. That includes old addresses. Your wallet will watch all those addresses, your wallet balance will reflect transactions involving all those addresses and when you go to spend money it will draw on coins sent to all those addresses. |
