Title: What's the best altcoin for micro-transactions?
Post by: TsuyokuNaritai on May 05, 2013, 09:37:46 PM
Which, if any, of the alt cryptocurrencies is currently better at supporting very small transactions?

Thanks.

[Edit: I mean transactions that might sometimes need to be less than 54uBTC, because https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/2577 (https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/2577)]

If you mean microtransactions as in small fractions of the type of coin you are using, then that is very very different.

But if you mean microtransactions as in a very small value can be sent without transaction fees or with transaction fees that are only a very small fraction of the value sent, then DeVCoins might qualify.

Maybe. Maybe not though.

The problem is, the minimum transaction fee of a coin is intended to be enough VALUE that it is costly to spam.

So coins with very low value per coin tend to need larger fractions of a coin as minimum transaction fee.

DeVCoins are so very cheap per coin that transaction fees can easily be whole coins, I have seen just recently a five devcoin fee on a devcoin transaction I sent. But of course I was sending ten or twenty million devcoins at the time so it was, relatively, a tiny fee.

If value is what you are concerned about, not ability to send fractions of a coin, then basically you want the most worthless coin that the person you are sending to considers worth receiving at all.

Or the most worthless coin they have any chance of eventually being able to exchange once they save up enough of them to even be worth exchanging.

I think time has proven that DOGE is the best for microtransactions... Nothing beats a 1 minute confirm time. Who knows... now that all the DOGEs are out there, maybe price will finally stabilize and the fast block time will work to its advantage, and it will thusly become a(n even more) serious coin.

Yes i agree with you. At the moment DOGE is the best for microtransactions. Maybe in the future there wel come faster microtransactions.

^^
i agree, i like DogeCoin best for this purpose. because the transaction fee is so small (1 DOGE which is equal to 54 satoshi right now) and also the transaction will be confirmed so fast (around 1 minute).
i always use DOGE especially if i want to transfer money between exchangers, especially if they ask for huge bitcoin fees i use DOGE instead and pay 1/1000 of that amount and i am sure that i can sell it to the same price over the other place.

any altcoin with fast blocks and minimum fees. Dogecoin was mentioned, and that's a good example.

Vanillacoin has 0.0005 coin per kilobyte transaction fees currently and with ZeroTime (zero confirmation transactions) you can respend coins within 2-3 seconds.

I would also use dogecoin because if the volume (easy to convert to bitcoin), speed and price steadiness at the moment. It will be hard to lose money if you use it for a quick transfer.

I just came here to say exactly the same thing. Dogecoin started as a joke but it leads micro-payment and gambling business now. It'd be my first choice.

Microtransactions <> fast transactions. Very small fee is enough. Block time is irrelevant for PoW coins with regard to confirmation.

Doge used to have a future however since the dev has left the coin and the community is not as active as it used to be I have my doubts for Doge.
The stores that used to accept Doge as a payment, a lot have stopped accepting it.

All other coins that might be interesting as a micro payment do not have a ecosystem, let a lot stores where you can use these coins.
Currently I only see Digibyte expanding and more and more shops accepting it and now you can play League of Legends and earn Digibyte.

That is a general problem of (alt)cryptos at the moment. When price goes down, so does interest. When interest goes down, nobody uses it anymore and merchants are dropping the option.

Seriously, someone has already said it. DigiByte is best for micro-transactions. It was designed to compete with Visa and is billed as the future of micro-payments!  I'll admit I'm biased but I truly believe what I'm telling you.

yes.  i like digi.  more professional approach to the tech and getting the tech right.

also has defined the market sector that is best to focus one.  thumbs up.

but the general public ... still such doge.

market wise Doge is finding a solid price range and has vol and capital to keep it a top the list.

Do you think digi group has the chops to take on and take out Doge?

I don’t even see it as battle, so I don’t see the need to take on and take out Doge not intentionally anyway. What I do see is this, DigiByte has a 110% devoted developers headed up by Jared Tate who has always and will continue to improve DigiByte. I’m sorry but Doge coin development looks like a spent force to me, it started as a Joke and its developer abandoned it dissing his own community. Doge has thrown in its bag as far as mining goes with lite but the fact that it is still where it is today is testament to the Doge community and for sure that has to stand for something but the Doge community or even the Bitcoin community are not the general public, the gp are not enthusiastic about this technology, they don’t understand or want to understand it and they will be dragged kicking and screaming into accepting it eventually because it is the right tool for the job.
You are right that there is always a lot of infighting between different crypto communities, I personally see this as a disruptive force in the mass adoption of the technology but the madness will come to an end, one day. This really is a good time to shapeshift some of those Doge coins into DigiByte, the exchange rate is fantastic right now. I would hope that many Doge coin enthusiasts, if they have not already, will accept and embrace Digibyte as the way forward as we are all clearly still in the investment stages.

There's no need for development right now for Dogecoin. It's already used by many for micro payments, especially for gambling.

The best I can right now I think is Cardano. ADa have the fastest block to network I have seen a very good team and the growing community this has helped establish my trust in the platform the bad thing about this platform it is that it is a new platform and it is fairly new to the cryptocurrency market and claims itself to have the best blocked your network.

Probably the best would either be dash or ripple, dash has a really fast transaction with practically unnoticeable fees, but it is not that popular so there are not that many investments involved into it which means it is not the best competitor when it comes to being the best for micro transactions, ripple however has fast transaction and very minimal fees, and it is starting to get very popular it is the third in terms of market cap so we will defiantly see some investments involved in accepting it as a payment method.
