Title: how to get BTC in the UK?
Post by: majorlee on May 06, 2013, 02:58:43 PM
Been spending far too much time trying to get BTC through bank transfers here in the UK

blockchain seems not to be accepting ANY form of payment to get bitcoins

if have asked a few old sellers and no joy, all the other websites seem to be very expensive mark ups

any advice for newbies in the UK trying to get BTC?

You have a fair few options - Bitbargain (https://bitbargain.co.uk/), Local Bitcoins (https://localbitcoins.com/), Bbitcoin Fridge (http://bitcoinfridge.co.uk/) and Speedy Bitcoin (https://speedybitcoin.co.uk/home). All of these have quite high fees. You can also try Bitstamp (http://bitstamp.net), but you'll get hit with high SEPA fees from your bank, unless you use a money transfer service like Tranzfers (http://www.tranzfers.com/). Have a look at the BitcoinUK subreddit (http://reddit.com/r/bitcoinuk).

If you bank with barclays you can do it without even leaving your home, you can do it online in a few minutes.
The actual transfer takes a couple of days though.
As long as you've signed up to their pin sentry system your good to go!.

It's instant, all UK Faster Payments are free and instant. I deal with Bitcoin via that method.

I just did a wire transfer, and i had to pay a £36 fee, the money didnt appear on my mt gox account till 2 days after.
I'll have to look into the faster payments, i didnt see that as an option when i was looking into getting some money into mt gox.
I've only being doing this for a week, so i'm still a noob :)

That's because you're sending abroad to China or when ever MtGox's bank is located. When I sell Bitcoins via UK Bank Transfer it is free to any UK bank. My buyers never pay fee's. It is also instant.

Yes but, it's getting the funds into the account that is the hard part.

BTC-E doesnt seem to have a wire transfer option, you have to use services like okpay.
But okpay have a policy that you can only use their services if you dont use it to transfer money to bitcoin exchanges.
They will freeze your account pending AML investigation, at least thats how i interpreted it when i signed up to their site.
So for BTC-E i just transfer crypto currency directly from mining.

As a withdraw option i see i can use paypal, but i havent made enough to make use of it yet.

Use your online banking, that's how I sell my Bitcoins to my customers and it works fine.

All the UK exchanges got taken down due to the banks closing their accounts but private sellers still sell coins. Just check out the marketplace.

Interesting but the prices are well over Bitcoin exchange prices, the localbitcoin prices are all over the place, looks abit dodgy to me.

LocalBitcoin prices are generally higher, how many are you trying to buy anyway.

I'm not looking  to buy anymore at least right now, i've been mining 24/7 for the past week on alt currencies and exchanging them for bitcoins and i bought some from mt gox when i did my bank transfer.
Pretty cheap too at the time, something like £52 a bitcoin :)

This doesn't work anymore though does it? Unless your talking about using barclays to buy btc on one of those ripoff buyer to seller sites and not with a major exchange?

From a UK bank account you can use a free Faster Payment transfter into CurrencyFair.com.  You need to have a verified account in CurrencyFair - similar to the Gox verification system but much faster.

Once you have funds in CurrencyFair, you can trade for Euros then SEPA transfer from there into Bitstamp for a €3.

Bitstamp offer free BCT withdrawals so you can move money from there to other exchanges.

* I have used bitbargain for several purchases and sales myself and I can confirm it is legit.

It uses a straight forward transfer via 'UK Bank transfer' / 'Barclays PINGIT' / 'OKPAY' to name a few.

There are no hidden charges.

I used to use blockchain.info before they had to stop deposits.  TBH although the rates may seem high on bitbargain, once you factor in commission etc. from other methods the price is actually quite good if you watch and wait you can get a 'bargain'.

I haven't had any experience with localbitcoins yet ... probably because I live in a small town .. I never met anyone here who's even heard of BTC yet.

give bitbargain a try (even a small amt) its very straight forward.

hope this helps.
