I found it quite entertaining, and started to horse around a bit.. After a while, I realize that the address 16QaFeudRUt8NYy2yzjm3BMvG4xBbAsBFM actually contains 0.01~ BTC ! ! ! I did my boldest attempt to claim these, presumably, long-forgotten coins. (last transaction was in 2014) Without any success though... I ended up questioning the extend of my bitcoin knowledge. In my head, it would be simple to just import the 'leaked' private key in some wallet. Now I am like 60% sure that it is 'burn' address or something similar.. Yeah. This is basically what some altcoins used as a technique to distribute the coins. For example, counterparty comes to mind first. He recently posted that on his twitter account for no reason, i guess he wanted to get people panicking about bitcoin. The so called directory isn't a directory at all, the addresses are generated when you actually click each link. There isn't a sextillion addresses and priv keys or w/e on their servers. I randomly stumbled upon it, i am not aware of any statement/post Vitalik has made :) I read the FAQ in directory.io though, and it does explain how it is a "parlor trick", just like the "worlds credit card pin codes leaked!"..
