I'm fixing to buy my first GPU Ethereum rig. I plan on buying a Bitcoin or Litecoin ASIC rig soon also. Would you suggest buying a gaming desktop PC to work with also?

Since your first goal is to build eth rig, buying a gaming desktop is good just make sure that you should check first the hash rate of that GPU. But I suggest that you should wait the upcoming release of nvidia after the shortage of GPU's because of the crypto miners. Actually there's a lot of it, I can't suggest them one by one, they can be found on google.

If you are a gamer and play games anyways, I can recommend you buy some standard equipment and 2x 1080ti´s and run them via nicehash. Your ROI for the whole PC should be ~280 days, not good for a miner, BUT you get a free gaming PC.

If you are not interested in gaming, building a rig is of course the better choise

buying a gaming rig to mine is overkill. it will have a much stronger cpu than needed as well as more storage and more ram than needed.

if you do want to go that route though make sure it can take at least two video cards (with good spacing between them) and have the cooling and psu power (with extra peg connectors) to handle 300-400+ watts of video cards. like 1080(ti)s.

plenty of guides here to make cheap miners for a fraction of the cost of a "gaming" rig.

of course if your primary goal is to game and make a little coin on the side, go for the gaming rig.

Don't worry about the PC you need to look at the PSU and the gpu's you want to use as well ad the motherboard that has risers to accommodate the additional gpus. Just use a cheapy cpu and ram.

If he has enough capital there is no harm in buying a more sophisticated desktop PC to facilitate heavy performance.

I guess it would be a good to go with the gaming PC option if you're just looking into it for testing and as a hobby, if it doesn't really work out, you indeed still have the gaming pc. Whereas if you had just built a dedicated mining rig, you'd be at a total loss if you decided that mining wasn't for you.

One other thing though, how much value does it really retain as a gaming pc after you've used it for mining for, say, a year or more?

DIY. Build your own PC.
Not only is technically closer to achieve seamless mining but also cheaper and you'll learn how to assemble a PC.

Endless hours of video instructions are available on YouTube, plus countless updated step by step tutorials all over the web.

And... it's fun as hell!

If you don't wanna risk it, at least try to set up a Raspberry Pi or similar, just for the experience.

If you want a gaming pc high gpu can be still recommend to mine and to use for gaming..

As long as you are looking at the PCI slots and insuring the space is there for multiple cards and they will not be cramped, then the PC that comes in that package is fine.  Other than that, you can replace that power supply with a larger unit, even if it doesn't fit the chassis, the extra power will keep things stable.
