Title: Potentially Overloading My PSU
Post by: ss317 on June 21, 2017, 04:12:55 AM
Hi Everyone,

PSU: 1200W Seasonic Prime Platinum
M/B: MSI Z170A SLI Plus
Processor: Pentium
6 GPUs: EVGA GTX 1070 Super Clocked (NVIDIA recommended 500W for the first GPU and add 170W for each addn'l GPU)
HDD: Sandisk 120GB SS
Other: 6 powered risers
RAM: 4 GB
OS: Windows 10
Mining Software: Claymore

I am new to mining and started to use claymore for mining ethereum.  I heard my PSU making weird electrical noises when I had all six GPUs running at once.  I called NVIDIA and they mentioned that the minimum PSU watt should be 1350 for six GPUs.  I have seen numerous videos online of people using 1200W PSUs with 6 or more GPUs (GTX 1070s included).  Am I overreacting or is there something that I am missing regarding these mining builds?  I haven't overclocked the motherboard yet or done anything of that sort - currently getting 155 MH/S with all 6 running.

6*170 is 1020 watts plus the system is probably around 70 watts. That's 1090 watts.

Personally, I don't go above 80% on PSUs for 0-24h use so the effective capacity for me would be 960 watts.

Therefore if you were to reduce the power limit on the cards to 87% (147.9 watts per card) you'd end up with a total of 957.4 watts.

But, even if you were to use 1200 watts, the PSU should not make any weird noises other than the louder fan.

If you're mining Eth, reduce power limit to 65% or even 60% with just an overclock on the memory and see what hash you get. You can get these cards down to ~100W each with minimal loss in mining performance and the 1200W starts looking like overkill :)
Find a perf/watt balance you are comfortable with

That power supply SHOULD handle those 6  cards - if you keep the TDP no higher than 100%.
It will be a LOT happier with the cards at 80% or less.

TDP on that particular card at factory settings (I have 3 of them) is 155 watts, NOT 170.

Best settings for ETH is normally "max overclock your ram can handle, then drop TDP 'till the hashrate starts dropping noticeably".
They should handle at least a +400 (afterburner setting, or PrecisionX as I recall works the same on that) overclock on the RAM with good reliability.

If your PS is making "wierd noises" though, you might have a failing PS. Even Seasonic has occasional "infant mortality" issues.
