Title: Mining an Altcoin for Bitcoin
Post by: super3 on May 07, 2013, 06:10:15 PM
I was just curious if anyone mined altcoins, and then immediately converted them to Bitcoin. According to Dustcoin on my my rig's specs I get would make an extra $10 a month mining Terracoins instead.

The problem is that the altcoin prices are more volatile than bitcoin, some coins (like Terracoin) will fluxuate from between profitable/not profitable a couple times a day. That being said, I made a nice bit of money mining feathercoin and freicoin the past few days.

Check out coinchoose.com, they have historical profitability data for most of the coins that Duscoin supports.

Also, clock your scrypt mining rates, Litecoin is literally at 150% right now, much better than BTC or TRC.

I had trouble setting up Litecoin mining, but I might try again (I didn't spend that much time troubleshooting). From what I have seen TRC has been consistently more profitable.

That might be able to be fixed though. It would be conceivable to setup a program on a pool that does multiple alt coins, like Coinotron. Just check check the difficultly every few minutes, and just mine the most profitable one. Even with fees you would get about double your mining worth, and be unaffected by fluctuations in a single altcoin.

That is what CryptoSwitcher does: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=172121.0

Hi,

Altcoinplex provide the following features:

- Automines a basket of the most profitable alternative coins!
- Our intelligent, built from ground up, server daemon determines the amount of mining power to allocate to each coin in our basket constantly! This reduces the payout variance when an individual coin profitability spikes or tanks during short intervals!
- Payouts are determined in a modified PPLNS system, which takes into account each coin in the basket's mining difficulty and the shares submitted by each user during the payout interval.
- Automatically exchanges and payouts in your desired coin! No more maintaining multiple wallets!
- Daily payouts!
