Title: how to store bitcoin for long term?
Post by: clardalan on June 24, 2017, 05:26:18 PM
I would like to do the following:

generate a publickey/private key combi.
send some small btc to the publicaddress and send it back to test it works.
send main sum btc to the publickey.
safely store the private key, without risking someone figures out what it is.

How can I best do this?

The better option would be buy a Hardware Wallet like Trezor or Ledger Nano S, but if you don't want to invest money on it, you should generate and print a paper wallet, send your BTC and keep it on a safe place.

Here is a quick tutorial on how to do this: http://www.coindesk.com/information/paper-wallet-tutorial/

Send a very low amount of BTC to the address, see if arrived and then send all the rest. Only touch on that paper wallet when you want to cashout. That way your Bitcoins will be safe, since your private key info never went through the internet.

in my experience it depends on how long you want to keep them. if it is the real cold cold-storage then a paper wallet is the best option since you won't be accessing it but if you want to spend the funds then a paper wallet is going to prove some difficulties when you want to spend anything. since you will have to sweep the keys then generate a new paper wallet to send the remaining funds to that.
in this case a hardware wallet or another wallet installed on another offline computer is best. like electrum on an old PC or a live linux.

If you aren't thinking about spending it frequently, I wouldn't recommend investing in hardware wallet.

Here's what you can do:
1. Boot tails in a live USB.
2. Download and run bitaddress.org.
3. Generate a paper wallet and encrypt it with BIP38.
4. Send Bitcoins to the address, decrypt the private key and import it into Electrum.
5. Test it out.

When you want to spend it, do 4 and 5 again.

Better if you will not save the private key in your desktop or laptop devices for it can be hijacked by some person who has speciality into it,it iss safer to store it onyour mind or on a note i think just like what i do

There are many bitcoin storage or wallet you can choose from Desktop Wallets, Mobile Wallets, Online Wallets, Hardware Wallets, Ledger Wallets, Paper Wallets and so on..., well they all have private keys actually that is the point in having wallets, you need to choose and explore from this different types of wallets what is best and you think are more secure, My opinion is a cold storage just like a hardware wallet like Trezor that don't rely on third-party bitcoin storage services.

Make a BIP38 encrypted private key and put it in the cloud, or copy the key to several locations, so you won't lose it. Store the password securely and separately from the BIP38 encrypted key of course.
That kind of cryptography is very hard to brute force since the decryption algorithm is very intensive to compute, so you can still have a reasonably memorable password, but not too short of course.

In my opinion do it with bitaddress.org and download the client-side, the link is provided on the website, then you can use it offline and turn the internet off. You can make an encrypted wallet.

Once you've generated a wallet, print three or four copies. Send a small BTC amount to test it. Then go to an arts and crafts store and buy those self-laminating packs and laminate your wallets. Keep these in separate safe spots you trust.

I have purchased a Ledger Nano S quite a while ago and I have been using it to store most of my bitcoins now, it is more secure comparing to a paper wallet as there might be a chance the paper wallet QR code might be damage when you kept it for a long period of time. I have heard good reviews about Trezor hardware wallet too, but it is much more expensive than Ledger, so I choose the cheaper alternative and it is working great for me at the moment  :)

Who in their right mind would even give Poloniex their coins at all?

You'd be better off handing the keys to some homeless guy on the street.

Ranochigo's advice is the best.  The easiest solution for the non-tech savvy is hardware wallets, but you'll have to be careful with the software updates if you do that.

There are YouTube videos which explain clearly how to make a paper wallet. I am guessing this is what you want based on your post. This is by far the safest method of storing your Bitcoin, and I highly recommend it if that is your intention. Best of luck!

This really depends on the amount of money you plan to invest. If large amount then go with one of the solutions mentioned above. Otherwise iPhone app and write down the private key

don't ever listen to this guys , poloniex is having a lot of problems now and they aren't paying people their money
personally I have been waiting for my money for over 40 days now

you should get a Trezor , if you find it expensive or not easy to get in your country just create a paper wallet it's safe and free

If you don't trust online bitcoin wallet! you can used your own hardware or pc to create your own wallet, but for me I used coins[.]ph online bitcoin wallet because I already used it for a long time. It is already upon you on how do you keep safe your bitcoin and do it with your own risk.

Put the bitcoins on two kinds of wallet, online (blockchain.info) and offline wallet it will be safe to store bitcoins for long term
and put the private key on save place and never lost the password,
it is best time to store bitcoins for long term never put the bitcoins on one of kinds wallet, it is dangerous because actually
risk losing bitcoins always be there.

If I were you don't ever recommend an online wallet like coins.ph, I personally use the website this guy use but so far it is okay to use but I don't recommend online wallet such as this but if you want online wallet I recommend blockchain.info more than coins.ph. It is better to follow this guy's first recommendation because it is better to use your own PC or hardware to store bitcoin via electrum and the likes because you control private keys of the bitcoin addresses there. Also like what others say, paper wallet is also good.

Lots of guides and tutorials are out now on the internet. You can read some of them as only you will get a mixed information here and some replies are definitely out of topic.

How? Go to google and search for "storing bitcoin for long term bitcointalk" and it will give you the results from bitcointalk forum. If outside of bitcointalk just removed the term bitcointalk on the search and it will give you some of the sites articles and tutorials.

If I am correct, you want to test the Bitcoin address/Private key before you use it for long-term storage, right? I use Tails OS with a built-in wallet and I boot from it with a persistent volume. Now you just generate the paper wallet in advance with the Bitaddress.org script and you sweep the wallet. < Many people says that the wallet is compromised, but I have not had problems with any of my paper wallets, since I have done this >

Or use this - https://blockchain.info/de/wallet/paper-tutorial

For me I just hold it with my current bitcoin wallet provider here in Philippines the coins[.]ph because they are legal and known here already for a long time and I trust it with no problem sense I open my account there.

But we have different ways on how to handle and take risk of our bitcoin.

i would just use a is stick to hold the wallet.dat not individual private key because there are hidden address in the wallet

so if you only save the private key you may lose the chance to backup some coin

I also leave few btc online for day shopping just yo not expose much my cold storage in case I need  to spend

another reason is that, those by can fiction as a 'trap' on the sense that if they steal me those I know my machine is infected

If you really want some secured wallet for bitcoin and also for cold storage and long term then hardware wallet is one of the best choice because hardware wallets are encrypted and they are all decentralized so you are still controlling all of your money and it is in your hand, not in a site or app but in your hand so it is more like having an advantage for long term because you don't need to worry about the hackers anymore.

For a long period of time should you choose the wallet offline. It will make you very safe compared to storing it in web wallet.
Web wallet is currently very well used for mobility, while if your goal is just save then the offline wallet should you choose.

You can try web wallet if you want store bitcoin for 1-2years but if you stored for more long term like 3-10 years, download bitcoin core and keep it your bitcoin on the wallet. Remember to don't stored it on exchange site.

I think the best way to store bitcoins long term is an encrypted offline generated private key, it's both secure and better as long term storage for the currency,
I suggest using Armory as well, seeing how much the emphasis on security is and how well built it can be, little harder to use for newbies.

Just print paper wallet because it is very easy to create and it doesn't need too much money to create it because you'll just need to print it from the paper and secure it by placing it to the safe places like in the vault or in a zipper bag so it will become a water proof. Paper wallet is one of the most trusted offline storage and i think that it is the best because of its affordability.

Say for example after August first we have bitcoin 'classic' and bitcoin 'new'

What will happen to coins on a hardware or cold storage wallet when you plug them back in?  ???

I think Electrum and tools for importing their seeds should be around for a long time. Hardware wallets use similar seed structure so they can be a good choice too.
