Title: List of wallets that support mBTC
Post by: Technomage on May 08, 2013, 10:55:11 AM
There has been a lot of talk recently within the Bitcoin community about starting to use mBTC instead of BTC. I happen to agree with this. mBTC already has a 10 times more natural valuation than BTC ($0.1 vs $100). I think it is time to start giving mBTC a chance.

The only way we can give it a chance is if Bitcoin wallets support mBTC properly. This thread is the discussion thread on mBTC wallet support. My knowledge is incomplete on this so my listing might be off. Please help me.

Wallets that support mBTC

Bitcoin-Qt (http://bitcoin.org/)
Electrum (http://electrum.org/)
Blockchain Wallet (https://blockchain.info/wallet/)
Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mycelium.wallet)

Wallets that don't support mBTC

Multibit (status: jim618 said that he will work on mBTC support after the San Jose conference (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=198952.msg2071008#msg2071008))
Coinbase (status: ?)
Armory (status: ?)
Android Bitcoin Wallet (status: ?)
Easywallet (status: kangasbros has stated to me in Finnish that he is currently not interested in implementing mBTC support)

Where do you even buy it from?  ???

MultiBit does not support mBTC yet no.
After the Bitcoin conference I am going to have a round of 'user interface tidy up'. Putting in mBTC and μBTC support is on the TODO list.

edit: Added to the list of MultiBit issues: https://github.com/jim618/multibit/issues/126 (https://github.com/jim618/multibit/issues/126)

My knowledge is incomplete on this

that's a nice way to say it.
you could have done some basic research instead of posting a zero-knowlegde statement.
Electrum does support mBTC.

Easywallet (status: kangasbros has stated to me in Finnish that he is currently not interested in implementing mBTC support)

I'm was not saying that. I just don't see the customer demand and/or benefit. I'm always ready to change my mind if I see a proof. However currently there exists about thousand more important or generally beneficial tasks on my TODO-list (in my opinion, of course).

From the same places where you buy BTC from. Millibitcoins or millibits or millies are bitcoins just the same, it's simply a different way of calculating how many you have. So instead of saying you have 1 BTC, you say you have 1000 mBTC.

Good to hear. Multibit is a great wallet by the way.

Electrum does support mBTC.

Well I'm sorry about that. Don't take it so seriously, lol. It's much faster for me to simply ask for corrections than install every single wallet and check for myself. I've never used Electrum so I had no direct knowledge.

Electrum has been added to the list of wallets that support mBTC. I'll also link each supporting wallet to their home page, which I'm not going to do for the non-supporting wallets (they don't yet deserve it).

How is my interpretation of your statement different from what you just said? Read it again, I said you're not "currently interested" which implies you might be interested in the future.

Still many wallets of which I'm not entirely sure of in regard to their mBTC support. If you guys have any info, please help.

Also, I want status information for all of the listed wallets. Of the development status of this feature, that is. The most prominent missing one is the Blockchain Wallet. It doesn't currently support mBTC as far as I know but I'd like to hear if piuk is going to add it.

mBTC is a nice concept but onlu useful once the MBT hit's a real high number. currently a mBTC is 12 cents?

It's already useful. Imagine paying a $11 lunch with bitcoins. That would be 0.1 BTC & 100 mBTC. Both are okay at the moment, but even doubling BTC value once would tilt the scale for mBTC's benefit. Better to prepare now.

I got confirmation from piuk that Blockchain Wallet's web interface will have mBTC support in a few days. That's a significant step.

I'm still missing status information on Coinbase, Armory and Android Bitcoin Wallet. All the others in my list are covered. If there are other significant wallets that I haven't listed, please tell me also.

I've updated the list. Blockchain Wallet now has support for mBTC. You can change to mBTC mode from the wallet settings.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind this in MultiBit. It'd probably make me feel a little richer :P

Another update. The new version of Bitcoinspinner, Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet, has full support for mBTC. It's an excellent wallet by the way!

It sure appeals more to the monkey parts of your brain despite there being no actual difference it sounds great that you can buy a WHOLE VIRTUAL 1000 bananas instead of just 1 which is worth the same as the thousand.

when our service launches, it will be using mBTC, and allow users to switch between BTC and mBTC.  We'll also be branding mBTC as "bits".

too early right now.. maybe after it hits $1,000 (for the media hype). that number is a pretty big milestone, as i think it is a magic psychological milestone.

I like the idea of branding mBTC. "Bits" sounds excellent. I hope something like this picks up!
