Title: mining with a 5850 & 7950 in the same windows OS rig
Post by: 7iain7 on May 08, 2013, 05:22:19 PM
Hi all, my problem is i cannot get my 5850 to run with the 7950 in the same rig.
5850 won't mine using catalyst 13.xx.
if i downgrade to catalyst 11.xx then the 7950 won't mine.
is the any way of install both catalyst 13.xx & catalyst 11.xx on the same windows PC.

could i run vmware and run another os as a work around ?
Many thanks 7iain7

I don't know about your ideas in your questions, maybe others have some input.

But most people put their 5xxx and 6xxx GPU's in one machine and their 7xxx GPU's in another for the reasons you discovered.

I had a similar issue with a Windows rig containing a 5850 and a 7970 GPU.  You are correct about the 11.xx and 13.xx drivers not seeing both cards. I downloaded every driver version (11.xx to 13.xx) and tried them one at a time starting from the oldest.  It took a while but I finally found a version that recognized both cards.  I don't remember off hand exactly which one, but I do recall is was around 12.30 (plus or minus a version or two).

Hope this helps.

lemonys thank you for the info 12.3 works with both cards but with a performance hit, used to get about 310Mhash/s from 5850 now 250Mhash/s
& 510Mhash/s from 7950 now 480Mhash/s with the same amount of overclocking on both.Going to have a play & see if i can get the hash rate up a bit.

Thank for your help.  ;D ;D ;D

UPDATE: hash rate is all over the place

OpenCL SDK 2.6+ is terrible for 5xxx GPU's, but necessary for 7xxx GPU's.  Which is why people put them in separate machines.

I recently put a 7790 in a machine with a 6670. The 13.4 and 13.5 drivers saw all the cards but if I went to any prior drivers the 7790 would not be seen. I'm using the 13.5 beta 2 drivers right now. I think the sdk in them is 2.8?

Also some other tests I just got done with. gpu0=hd7790, gpu1=hd6670

cgminer.exe -o http://pit.deepbit.net:8332 -u homer -p simpson -k diablo
getwork pool NOT stratum (I suspected I was having issues with stratum)

1.6.2 unable to read kernel files?
2.0.2 ^^^
2.3.2 connect to pool then crash
2.6.4 works! int6 (diablo 279/105) gpu1 hw error
2.7.7 works! int6 (diablo 276/106) gpu1 hw error
2.8.3 works! int6 (diablo 275/106) gpu1 hw error
2.8.7 works! int6 (diablo 276/106) gpu1 hw error
2.9.4 works! int6 (diablo 275/106) gpu1 hw error
3.1.0 works! int6 (diablo 275/106)
3.1.1 connect to pool then crash

----------

cgminer.exe -o http://127.0.0.1:10332 -u homer -p simpson --scrypt --thread-concurrency 4096 --worksize 64 -I 6
Was having more issues with scrypt than with the bitcoin mining.

1.6.2 no scrypt support
2.0.2 ^^^
2.3.2 ^^^
2.6.4 connect to pool then crash
2.7.7 ^^^
2.8.3 ^^^
2.8.7 connect odd behavoir
2.9.4 ^^^
3.1.0 connect odd behavoir, kinda works, disables gpu 1
3.1.1 connect to pool then crash

I have 7970's and 6950's in the same rig.  I can give you my driver versions and everything if you are interested.  That might get your 7xxx series and 6xxx series cards to work together.

Wait does the ^^^ mean that it works?

I dont like mixing cards, just personal preference to avoid these issues, I am pretty sold on 7970s
