Title: Why such restricted restrictions on Newbies?
Post by: glowkeeper on May 08, 2013, 06:19:09 PM
I'm about to receive 3 cairnsmore1's and a rainbow pi and wanted to post a "anyone got a howto or any tips?" in the custom hardware/fpga section - then find I have to make 5 posts to be able to do that. Why?

It is to keep bots away from this site.

Yeah, but a major pain in the butt. Been on forums for 20 years now and the first time I've come across anything quite so restrictive.....

(that's 2/5  :D)

I need support in the bitcoinsports.eu thread but I have to get my newbie posts out of the way before I can post there.  :(

just make sure you post in the proper topics, otherwise risk a deleted post :/

I've made more than 5 posts. How come I still can't post anywhere else?

I think you need to be online for a certian ammount of time first.

Yep, 4 or more hours and 5 or more posts.
2/5 for me. BYAHHHHHHH!

5 posts. Now I've gotta sit and click my thumbs for 45 minutes until I can post for real. Grrrrrrrr.......

I also initially didn't like the newbie controls, because I only signed up when I REALLY felt the need to post on something.

However, I know the community has suffered from so many scams, and these restrictions do help to limit them, and other problems such as adverts posted by bots.

On the plus side, it introduced me to the newbie section, which I haven't browsed in the past. Some nuggets lying around here as well.

Five posts (this is the sixth) and 5h30m logged in, and still newbie. I guess the process is manual?

Title: Re: Why such restricted restrictions on Newbies?

I wanted to react to a post. Now I have to write 5 bullshit posts before I can say something meaningfull.
Live is a bitch and spambots should die !

Or and least their operators should suffer :)

Indeed. But now we're all stuck here in the newbies forum, unable to get all the help that we want :P
I think we just gotta live with it. I don't think that they're gonna change it, though..

Atleast it keeps the forum spam-free. Atleast from bots..

Ah, found a post on the newbie whitelist request thread that suggests a script runs at intervals to upgrade qualifying newbies to to Jr. Member. The script runs approximately every 10 minutes, so you have to wait a little after post #5; you don't get upgraded immediately after post #5.

I wanted to edit my original post above, but couldn't find a way to do it (sorry of that means I'm a newbie to forums in general, which I am)

or operators should kill spambots

Ok, so here's another post.  I didn't know the parameters.  I guess I should read more.

Title: Re: Why such restricted restrictions on Newbies?
Post by: badspark on May 09, 2013, 09:45:12 AM
i think that killing spambots is impossible.
How would you make a difference between a normaal user and a bot with 1 post?

On the other hand killing those spambot operators sounds good. Too bad that is illegal.
Maybe we could make a law that makes is possible? So that no innocents are hurt in the process. <irony mark to prevent a flame>

Something very curious happened here.
I subscribed in the 2 weeks only here and on miningpool.nl with this email adres.
Since yesterday i got 4 emails from budgetknallers, a spammer.
Anyone else saw the same thing or is it just me?

yeah. keep it clean from evil machines by forcing the newbies through something like a mass turing test. funny.

How does it govern the time I've been logged in? I've been logged in for hour upon hour upon hour. Yet it reckons I'm still only on 3:31 :(

One year very very very soon, I'll be able to post......

It's supposed to be four hours, isn't it? Is that not just four hours from registration? Do you have to be actually viewing the site?

Because the owners and mods here dont want new guys to come in all guns blazing and talk about random stuff that already might have been discussed.

You want to be treated as a normal member here, you gotta do everything OTHER normal members did to get where we are today :)

Besides this is a good method to keep a check on the number of guys actually getting into to real deal so that the casual by passer can just pass us by :D

I think it is a reasonable requirement if you want users that aren't out to hit and run the place. May have to put the same type of restrictions on my forum that is not related to mining. I get flooded with spambots daily.

i cant help nobody being a newbie...so i try to read as much as i can.

Its kind of sad that i need to post 5 messages..even if they are just to achieve 5 posts

I think this newbie restriction is fair. Its makes spam bots way easier to spot as well.

I agree with some kind of restriction...but how can i newbie post 5 messages in newbie forum?
Thats the same as trolling...posting 5 messages with no content :(

Newbie to forum does not mean newbie in mining.
I have some questions to ask, but they only fit in other "pro" threads.

In the mean time..thats another post for me :)

It's not really that bad - some forums require 30 or even 50 posts.

One of the most restrictive forums I've seen. But if the content remains good, no complaints here  :D

So I've just spent hours reading through a thread about the ciarnsmores. Yet I'm still at 3:40. Methinks the script checking logged in time is broken......

I've been reading this and mining bitcoin for over 2 years but I never bothered to join.  Kicking myself now because I'd like to check out ripple and I missed the give away. Hopefully the do another one.

Same here.  I only registered when I wanted to reply, and then found out I couldn't make a reply.  If this site wasn't "the" place for crypto currency communication and news, then I probably would've left due to the restrictions in place.

There has to be a better system for handling bots... :/

Arrgh, first post. I guess I need to read and reply to more now. It was quite disconcerting navigating everywhere and finding no way to contact anyone (have a specific person I need to contact but they're in forums I can't reply to, and I can't PM, which means it's like staring at them behind a sound proof one-way glass wall shouting and they have no idea i'm there. Oh well...

yea i was very confuse why i cant post and i had to google what to do :D. there should be some big sign after you register that you are in newbie mode and you need to do this and that in order to promote to standard user.

It is to keep bots away from this site.

I'd pay a small bond (BTC) to skip the restrictions even if it meant loosing it if I turn out to be a bot.

The only downside is that we all have to post some rubbish in order to get numbers to be able to post the good stuff on other topics!

Title: Re: Why such restricted restrictions on Newbies?

Not necessarily.  I think that everyone has questions.  If a person is just getting into bitcoin there should be plenty to talk about without wasted posts.

If you're an old pro at it and just never posted, look around, lots and lots of questions to be answered!

Yes, take your point. There are unfortunately a lot of 'how are you' topics just to get the initial requirements met though. I am a hardware designer, and don't normally post but I am interested in Avalon Chips and need to get to a level when I can PM or POST purchases.
