Task manager or linux "top", your cpu should be going at it hard.

In the client, on the menubar, go to Help -> Debug -> Console. Now type "getmininginfo". If you see an amount in "hashespersec", you're mining. Also, on windows you can use the task manager to check the Yacoin client's cpu usage (use Ctrl-Shift-Esc as a shortcut). On Linux, open up a terminal and run the "top" or "htop" command to view cpu usage.

I didn't know if anything was really going on either, but I hoped the CPU usage was proof enough. Eventually I got a block :) Took me about 3 hours, but I got one!
