Title: Rebranded 5870 (6870) for only $130 on Newegg
Post by: SardonicJester on May 09, 2013, 01:24:56 PM
Someone on this forum showed me this and I figured I would share with the community.

Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202032 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202032)

These are 6870's that are really just rebranded 5870's.
So they pull over 400 mh/s-kh/s without the need to overclock.
All for $130 ($120 after the mail-in rebate).

That's over 100 mh/s-kh/s more than a typical 6870, for the same price as a used 6870 on Ebay.

Hurry and get yours before the vultures come, buy them all up, and then try to sell them at a ridiculous mark-up.

This is a hobby for me. I am not in this to get rich. I am here to have fun and support the currency, so I much rather help out others looking to get into mining by spreading this deal while it lasts.

Well I did some math.  If these cards do get 400KH each then 6 of them = 2.4MH and costs $780.  If I build a 4 7950 which will hash also at 2.4MH, it will cost $1200.  The issue is getting 6 working in one system.

Well I found the answers to my questions.
The 6870 have the same power requirement as the 7950 so your adding at least 300W to gain the same hash.

I just noticed that you said this card is actually a 5870 which gets >400 KH at 150W.  For me power(heat) is an issue so I'm trying to be efficient there.

Very true. It all depends on your budget. For a new person building a new rig (or someone just looking to replace their existing 6870s) this is worth it.

Let's say I want to make a cheap 3 gpu rig for a somewhat reasonable price. For example, we will say that all components needed minus the GPUs = $390.

I could make a 3 6870 rig for $780 and get 1.2MH = 1.5MH per $1

or

I could make a 1 7950 rig for $1350 and get 600MH = 0.4MH per $1

or (my situation)

I have a rig currently running 3 Barts 6870's.
By replacing the 3 6870s I get a total increase of ~300MH. (Basically adding another 6870)
And I can easily sell the Barts 6870s for ~$120 each. (same price as the Cypress 6870's after rebate)
It's not a lot, but it's still ~$2 extra everyday just for replacing my old (mining dedicated) graphics cards for brand new mining dedicated cards. (Can't really go wrong with practically free MH/s AND a fresh warranty)

It all depends on how much money the person wants to spend and if they are planning on expanding. Also if they already have the other components like in your example.

For your scenario yes, definitely go with 7950s (My main rig is 7950's).

But for people who also need to budget in the cost of the other components, this is a cheaper alternative.

6870 - 400mh/s - $130
7950 - 600mh/s  - $300

Is that 400 Mhash for Bitcoin or Litecoin?

I would guess for both since it is using the Cypress (5870) and 5870s get 400 avg in both mh/s and kh/s.

*Disclaimer*

I do not own any of these yet. I ordered 3 and will receive them probably on Monday. I am basing this on the Feedback given of people reporting that this card is identified as a 5800 series Cypress card.

Thanks. Done. Ordered one to try out. If it works well, I'll probabaly order more (assuming they aren't all sold out). I'm a casual litecoin miner, and I've been needing a decent graphics card for my home theater rig. I figure I can mine with it when I'm not watching movies. If it can eventually pay for itself, so much the better.  ;D

Man you could have waited for me to get my hands on these before you told everyone!   :'(

Now I just have to hope they don't go out of stock…  However, we can assume that Sapphire has quite a few of these laying around.  They obviously had enough 5870's leftover to justify the time spent re-branding it as a 6870.

I swear Sapphire must just buy up chunks of 'old' GPUs from AMD on the cheap and then make runs of cheap cards. The HD 5830 was an incredible hash/$ deal and they appear to have delivered again with this '6870'.

I am 99% positive that these are NOT rebranded 5870's. A 6870 only has 1120 shaders. A 5870 has 1600, and a 5830 has 1120. I'm pretty sure these are "rebranded" 5830's. Only reason I'm not 100% is because sapphire's site says 1600 shaders, which I'm damn sure is a typo. Sapphire's site has a number of other 6870's which show the correct 1120 shaders, but the one on the top says 1600 which I'm sure is wrong.

BUYER BEWARE!

It IS a gamble, but a user on reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1csukd/purchased_6870s_from_newegg_that_ended_up_being/ (http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1csukd/purchased_6870s_from_newegg_that_ended_up_being/) confirms 1600 shaders via GPU Caps, and the last review on Newegg confirms 390-420 MH/s.

I ordered 3 today, and they should arrive either Saturday or Monday.

Like bitcoiner49er said, it is a gamble. But hopefully it will be worth it.

Rebate has a 1 limit unless you use alternate mailing address, etc.

It's in the fine print.

I'm using 13.4 with my old 5870 and getting ~420khash/s with a smallish OC.  Settings for cgminer is --thread-concurrency 8000 -I17 -g1 -w256.  Could probably turn up intensity if you're not using it for displaying video on a monitor.

I only ordered one. It will be here Monday. In setting up a machine in anticipation of this thing turning up, has anybody used this (or any 5870) in a Linux based machine, and if so, what software and settings did you use for mining?

I really only use Linux for servers and basic workstations. Never for anything that required anything more than onboard graphics. Are drivers easy to get and install for this card?

I strictly run Ubuntu 12.04 for my miners. On my 5870s I seem to get crap performance with Reaper(340 KH/s per core) and CGMiner is completely unusable(tons of HW errors). For comparison my HD 7xxx cards have been a dream with CGMiner. You can download built binaries for CGminer, Reaper you'll have to build from source. Driver installation is easy but removing the drivers seems flawed so I just re-image the OS to test driver versions.

So what do you use, if Reaper and CG miner are garbage?

I'm a fan of Ubuntu 12.04 personally, and that's the build I'd probably use, so I'd probably run something similar to whatever you're doing, but with only one card. I'd really prefer to avoid buying another license for Windows.

Re-imaging is easy, since I have DRBL set up.

I run Reaper @ 340 KH/s per core @ 825/1225. 8000 thread concurrency, 5 gpu threads(doesn't seem to make a difference), intensity 17 and I think 32 share threads. I see very few hardware errors(maybe 0.001%) and I get around 10-15% stale shares while running p2pool(about average I believe). Tried up to 950MHz on the core but it decreased hashing throughput. Compared to people reporting upwards to 400 KH/s per 5870, I'm kind of pissed, but I don't know what there is left for me to adjust.

This is a hobby for me. I am not in this to get rich. I am here to have fun and support the currency, so I much rather help out others looking to get into mining by spreading this deal while it lasts.

thank you for sharing.  even though i am on newegg's site daily i still didn't notice these until you posted.

Anybody got theirs yet? Mine's out for delivery right now, but I won't be home for another 5 hours, to play around with it. Getting antsy!  ;D

I messaged jambaman42 in regards to a listing he made for a 6870:

Hi.  Which 6870 is that?  Is it the version with 1600 shaders?

Yes it is

How quickly can you mine LTC with it?

As it said in the post between 350-420 khash/s per card depending on the settings. I had it running at 414 pretty consistently but then I was fiddling with the settings and it went lower toward the end. This is without OC and temps were pretty near around 70-75 range.

I don't think any of you need to worry...

I don't see anywhere it mentions the number of shaders just people in the reviews. IDK I'm trying to pack as much at the office as possible without blowing the fuse as I don't pay for power there.  I can get more out of 7870XT even though the cost more.  I'm likely to be running 2x7870,2x7950,2x7870xt on a 15A line.

You should probably hold off for a week or so.  By then, we will have seen if the LTC price has caught up to the difficulty or not.  If it hasn't, it is only gonna get worse.

It's pretty much a no brainer that now is a horrible time to consider building a gpu farm especially if you're looking for short term profits.

You should be able to get 420 with 950mhz using all current version software.  I would personally run a little slower depending on heat, I like to run undervolted and see how fast I can go at 1 volt.  It makes less money but the hardware ages a lot slower.

SDK 2.8

I played around with the core and mem and the best I am getting is 360 kh/s.
Oh well, still slightly better than my old Barts 6870s plus these have warranties. So still a win in my book.

Just wish I could get the full 400 kh/s out of these cards. :/

The real question is what are your settings.  ;)

Here is what I am using:

CGminer 3.1.0

--scrypt -u XXXXX -p XXXXXXXX -o stratum+tcp://us.wemineltc.com:80 --gpu-platform 0 -d 1 -w 256 -v 1 -I 20 -g 1 -l 1 -T  --thread-concurrency 8000

Had the thread concurrency around 6144, but I get better kh/s with 8000.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Engine 900 memory 1300 thread concurrency 8192 intensity 18

The rest of your bat looks good.

Edit.. I may be able to push more out of the card but I haven't had time and wanted to run for 24hrs.

Will also try bitcoin mining in a few days to see what speeds I can get.

If memory serves, 11.11 is the last driver that included 2.5, with 11.12 they switched to 2.6, and there were reports of lowered hash rates.  I've used 11.11 on all of the 6xxx cards that I've setup, 13.4 on 7xxx, and the custom 7790 for those.

Edit: this is on Win7-64bit.

Linux was a complete fail for me. I kept getting kernel panics when booting after install of the 64bit Ubuntu 12.04, and I've had really limited time to play with it. My fuel pump went out on my car yesterday, so I spent the evening dealing with that. Anyway, I'm gonna give it a go on Windows XP (32bit), since I have an old box running that laying around here at work. I decided to bring in to work with me and play around with it while I work on other stuff.

It's got a plethora of updates to finish running before I can reboot to test it out, as it's been sitting for about a year, but I used SDK 2.5 and installed Catalyst 13.4.

Gonna try CGMiner with Litecoin. Will report back with results.

Well im having some trouble with these new 6870s/5870s. When i launch cgminer it just crashes before starting, ive tried scryptminer and guiminer with simular issues.. cannot start mining.

Ive tried drivers 11.11, 12.3 and the newest 13.3.

running win7 64bit and cgminer 3.1.0

tried sdk 2.8 with 13.3 and used 11.11 by itself... no good

i havnt tried my 7790 yet that will go in another rig. But this new rig with my two 6870s is just app crashing (stack overflow) before GUIminer or CGminer will launch.

Are you running it as a batch file? Try doing a "cd" to your cgminer folder, and manually entering the cgminer calls and see if you get errors.

I went home on my lunch and grabbed the adaptor, and had no luck. It still says, "clDevicesNum returned error, no GPUs usable"

Reinstalled SDK 2.5 and Driver 13.4. Starting to get annoyed.

Not sure what you mean by "uninstall all drivers via AMD".

I've installed and removed/reinstalled drivers 13.4 and 13.1 twice now, through the installer package.

When those install/uninstall they remove the SDK, so I've reinstalled the SDK, trying both 2.5 and 2.8, absolutely no change.

I'm using WindowsXP SP3, CGMiner3.1.1 and the above combinations of drivers and SDKs, tried both a separate build of CGMiner, and the one in GUI miner. No go. I did get the monitor adapter and it's plugged in and running a monitor, so that's no longer a part of the equation.

You need a utility like ATIman to completely remove all drivers.  If you run cgminer -n it will tell you what you have installed.  I am using 13.1 and everything is running good.  I had 13.4 and had to use ATIman to completely uninstall.

Edit ATIman (typo)

Googled "ATImon", and returned a bunch of russian crap, but nothing useful. What is ATImon, and where does one obtain it?

EDIT: I think I might have found something. Are you talking about AMD System Monitor?

EDIT 2: Hopefully that's not what you're talking about, because I installed it, and when I run it, I get "Sorry an unexpected error has occurred. Please restart the application." Now I remember why I haven't bought an AMD product in the past 12 years...  ::)

Edit 3: Thanks for the update. Couldn't find a reliable download source for ATIman (most hosting sites are blocked at my office), so I downloaded driver sweeper 3.2.0. I guess I'll give this a shot before I ship this piece of shit back to Newegg and call it a day.

I don't think driver sweeper will do a thorough job removing several instances of catalyst.  Other forum memebers recommend ATIman or clean install of windows.  I used ATIman and it did a good job.  it is a long process however so set some time aside. I guess the drivers are really embedded in the OS.
Good luck.

Well, that just about figures...

At this point I guess I'll have to decide whether to give Linux another shot, or buy a Windows 7 license and try it with that. Jesus, I hate ATI/AMD so much. They've never been able to build a reliable/stable product that actually works out of the box...  >:(

Their hardware is 'meh', but their software sucks major dickage!  ::)

AWESOME!!!

This did it. Thank you.

Here is what works for me:

CGminer 3.1.0

--scrypt -u XXXXX -p XXXXXXXX -o stratum+tcp://us.wemineltc.com:80 --gpu-platform 0 -d 1 -w 256 -v 1 -I 20 -g 1 -l 1 -T  --thread-concurrency 8192

Engine 900  Memory 1300

Pulling 425 kh/s each. :)

I got mine up and running on Windows 7 (got 30 days to get a license entered).

If I set it up this way:
Code:
cgminer --scrypt -u [my username] -p [my pass] -o http://ltc.kattare.com:9332 --gpu-platform 0 -d 1 -w 256 -v 1 -I 18 -g 1 -l 1 -T  --thread-concurrency 8192

I average about 330khash

If I set it up to leave it all in defaults,

Code:
cgminer --scrypt -u [my username] -p [my pass] -o http://ltc.kattare.com:9332 --gpu-platform 0 -I 18

It runs at 410k-430k/hash, but it causes the system to reboot after about 1-2 minutes (temps stay below 75 though, so not sure what's causing this. It might be an under-powered power supply?) Anyway, I'm using chrome remote desktop, because the machine I'm testing in is at my office, so I'll have to take a look at it in the morning and see if I can figure out why it's rebooting randomly. I have a Corsair 450watt PSU that should be able to handle the extra power draw (if indeed, that's what it is).

How do you change 'engine and memory'? Are you talking about adding arguments:

Code:
--gpu-engine 900 --gpu-memclock 1300

?

Edit: So after specifying 1600 shaders, I'm able to get 379k/hash.

Undervolted to 1.1v. No negative effect on speeds from undervolting...

424.5k/hash! Woot!

Running 1233 memclock, 899 gpu clock (going all the way to 900 causes it to drop back down to 365k/h), 1600 shaders, work size 256, undervolted to 1.1v.

Windows 7, Catalyst 13.1.

We'll see how stabile it is overnight.

Wrenchmonkey,

You should try thread concurrency settings instead of shaders. (No need for shaders after you fine tune)  This is from the cgminer read me:

"Setting thread concurrency overrides anything you put into --shaders and is ultimately a BETTER way to tune performance."

The post by SardonicJester a few posts up will give you the best results.

Btw, did disksweeper work?

Grats on getting up and running.  I've hardy ever been successful uninstalling and reinstalling different ATI drivers, most of the time I get the same application error if I do that.  Since these are mining machines, it doesn't take long for a reinstall (Win7 64-bit SP1 installed from USB stick, no updates or anything else).  I disable windows update and the rest of the action messages, install system drivers, a few utilities (VNC, Winzip, Afterburner, .net 4.0), then install the ATI drivers depending on card (6x gets 11.11, 7x gets 13.4, 7790 gets the custom one), copy my base cgminer and go.

The reinstall saves a lot of frustration.  A 450w PSU is enough to drive a single card, anything above that you may be running into power issues.

to those w/ ati driver problems in windows, I had tons recently when tryin to get 6 gpu's workin in windows 7 from a diff mix of gpu's.
I gave atimans uninstaller a try and it worked wonders! cleaned every single trace of ati driver, after fresh install of new driver - the 6 gpu's worked perfectly!

Hmmm. Damn. I'm getting only 360 after raising it to 950mhz and mem to 1200

Are you mining bitcoin?  if so drop the memory down to 150 or 300.

And dont use shitty SDK. 2.5 or 2.1 (if possible). You will gain much mhash.

Excuse me, what are those version numbers? I have installed AMD SDK Runtime version 10.0.1084.4:

I only have a single card. I didn't have any luck with XP, and it looks like it just flat out won't work with XP, so I gave up on any uninstallers, and did a Windows 7 install, and everything worked out of the box. The install didn't take long for me, since I just ran it off the Active Directory server here at my work. It's currently running in a company machine, while I figure out the settings and order a license key for my own rig at home, to run it off of.

I tried the settings that were posted above, but going for a full 900mhz and 1300mhz RAM. instantly caused a reboot (not sure if it was a bluescreen, or not, because I was running it over Google Remote Desktop. I will play around with settings some this morning. Forgot to bring the PSU with me. I'm only running one card.

I was able to run the RAM up to about 1280, but it was unstable and caused the driver to crash. It SEEMED stable at 1233mhz RAM and 898 Engine, @1.1v, but automatic updates rebooted the machine about 45 min. after I went to bed last night, so I have no idea if it would have run stabile or not. More testing throughout the day today. The difference between 1280 RAM and 1233 is only about 1.5khash, so definitely not worth pushing it much harder than it is, if it will run solid with these settings. There also doesn't seem to be much difference in performance in going from 20 Intensity down to 19, except that it too may have contributed to the driver failure when it was at the full 20. Hard to say without more long-term testing.

Thanks again for the help, you guys! I may give Linux another shot at home, before I drop $200 on a Windows 7 license.

EDIT: Well, crap. It ran for about an hour and a half and the driver crashed, and CGMiner declared the card "sick" but kept running it while very slowly dropping hashing speed. I gave it 10 minutes, and it never fully stopped, or restarted, so I restarted it manually.

Is this a driver issue? Any idea what might be causing this?

Thanks, I'll try dropping the clock speed.
Run it at stock speeds for a while.  I would also set intensity to 19.  Once it is stable at stock speeds then you can start playing around with bumping things up, although with scrypt mining it's more about ratios than how far you can push everything.

You can also look at recommendations for 5800 series cards from this thread - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=117221.0

good luck (again).

Sure you could. 100*F is 37*C. Still plenty of room for thermal exchange. I was only half serious anyway.

a good target is 75-80C. It won't start to overheat until, I think 90cish? But cooler is usually better.

yea.. there's no way i can keep the cards. I have one rig with 4 cards running, + 2 fans. Last night plugged the hair dryer and blew out the fuze, i would need at least 30 amps more in order to run the setup, i dont really want to rewire my electricity right now, so i still have 14 cars for sale for 145$ - local pick up only! Aurora, IL

Thanks!

Ive had to put my testing on hold for these new cards, my AC unit went out and my ambient temps are over 80f. Within 5 minutes my temps shoot over 90c with all fans at max.

In the mean time i reformatted my win7 box to ubuntu 12.04 LTS so once im not sweating in my seat ill test it further.

Does anyone have a suggest for which catalyst driver/sdk to go with for 5870/6870s on ubuntu? Im sure some searching could find this answer too..
