Title: Bitcoin-Qt
Post by: MrBea on May 10, 2013, 12:43:01 PM
My Bitcoin-Qt client won't sync.  Working on OSX 10.8.3
It's stuck on block number 235134 for about a day now.

What's up?

What to do?

In the bottom right corner - does it show active connections to the Bitcoin network?

Thanks Danny

Neither thread had "additional information"

Agreed, but with two identical threads, you are likely to end up with some people posing responses in one thread without knowledge that others are posting identical information in the other thread.  I'd suggest that you click the "lock topic" link at the bottom of the page on one of these threads so that all the responses go to the same thread.  If you do that, I'll delete my link post in the thread that you don't lock.  That way everyone will be directed to the same thread so the conversation won't split.

I've had 18 active connections and still the client is "catching up" to download the blockchain. I'm on OSX 10.8.2 does it really have to take this long. I read where you can forward port 8333 on your router to increase speed is this true?

According to other posts regarding this topic, assuming the sync is completely stuck even after shutdown and restart, the database files may have become corrupted. Other folks have recommended starting from scratch, after saving the wallet.dat of course, assuming you have already have some BTC in your wallet:

It is not unusual for the original blockchain download to take days with Bitcoin-QT.

Details?

Also, what do you use instead that you feel is more secure?

Keep your encrypted wallet on pendrive or any other external data storage to make sure it's safe (!). Every encyption can be broken in one way or another.

I appreciate that,  I am still working on it.  Maybe you can help me.  I am somewhat new to bitcoin.  My qt client is giving me this message "Warning:Displayed transactions may not be correct! You may need to upgrade, or other nodes may need to upgrade."  I am running the most current version of QT and i have reinstalled it several times.  I can not get the client to unfreeze.  Finally I switched users on my computer and installed a fresh version and downloaded the entire blockchain and then tried to open wallet.dat and the new version says my balance is 0.00.

I feel like Blockchain.info is more secure but they started doing something wierd now where the box where you used to be able to type in an address on the home page and research the transactions for that address is gone, and now I can't research the transactions.

Yeah, what the hell?  That transaction research thing was the thing that helped me unbork my wallet.  Where can you research bitcoin transactions now?

I still have the search when I visit https://blockchain.info however it is now in the upper right corner making it quick and easy to get to rather than half way down the page where I'd have to scroll every time I went to the page.
