So is ETH going to sink to the same levels as once upon a time giants like QuarkCoin, FastCoin and alike?

I mean who wants to wait a week for the block to sync? Who wants to carry 180GB+ of blockchain for a coin that is NOT #1 and will never be #1

Can any of the commonly used ethereum node software still sync the whole chain in a plausible amount of time?  I heard it was taking weeks and now all the software is defaulting to "fast sync" which is SPV-like security.

There really interesting point will be as their state gets as large as Bitcoin's blockchain.  They seem to be working to hold that back by having miners artificially limit it... and have tx fees not that dissimilar to Bitcoin's as a result even though a few months ago they were mocking fees being over a half cent.

I saw a post on reddit that the etherum admins had pledged to spend $1m/yr to keep 10,000 reliable nodes running themselves, if so then they may disguise the collapse of their network pretty well... but it didn't cite any sources.

It is already 40% BIGGER than bitcoins blockchain.

In a couple years people would need a 5tb hard drive and wait half year to have this crap etheriem wallet working, i guess the reason it don't have a solid stable working wallet at the moment because it drive the bagholders away, very smart.

So how is it that ETH has a huge market capital? It is second only to bitcoin!

With the pruning of fast sync it took me about 6 hours on a 10mb connection.

So in your opinion does ETH have longevity in the world of crypto? I mean bitcoin remains king

And it will increase day by day,a lot of  ICOs based on ETH ,this will be a big problem. I often use web wallet instead, so it's ok to me . 

So what will you do if the web wallet goes the way of Mt Gox or Cryptsy and you lose everything?

That's why the last time I tried to use Mist, I gave up because it was taking ages to sync  :P

Anyway this will become really hard in some years to keep alive a node

i have been saying this at least 6 months ago. but nobody listened and they mocked me.
having faster blocks (every ~13 seconds), having bigger blocks, pretending to process more transactions, ... all these things come at a cost. they are not free that everyone is always so happy about.

what happens when all of their advertisement gains some adoption finally. and a lot more transactions start to be processes by its network? they failed to handle a simple increase due to a smart contract recently and forced everyone to shut down their wallets and services because of network congestion!

what happens when there is a similar spam attack on ethereum blockchain for a couple of months or a couple of years like bitcoin has been experiencing?

I believe BTC chain will grow by 50% due to 1august upgrade

I think that's why the vitalik already planned to migrating the ethereum with the casper pos. But the bitcoin blockchain and ethereum blockchain gets bigger more and more everytime. it doesn't look good in my opinion.

Does anyone have any ideas about possible solutions? I mean having personal wallets are going to become more difficult as time goes by, with reliance on online wallets increasing however with MtGox and Cryptsy prime examples of customers being scammed there needs to be a re-think about the way forward.

This is one of the main reasons Ethereum became a hit and their sales exploded. When you're making a new coin and an coin issue system, you have to be better than the old one which Ethereum successfully achieved by expanding its blockchain and carry out lots of enhancements.

People are talking like 200 GB is a lot, your standard SSD is now 1000 GB  :D
Just use Parity as your desktop client, it only downloads what's required to do your tx... and only idiots use 3rd party wallets.
 
This might come as a shock to people, but Vitalik has been working on scaling for 2 years:

(1)  Casper POS

(2)  sharding to control blocksize increases

(3)  unlike Bitcoin, almost zero politics in Ethereum so shit gets done

Come on. 1000 GB is not standard now. Yes for some super expencive computers some ICO  dev can afford with others peoples money.

I dont see 200 GB blockchain a big problem but the fact that with this speed it will be 1000 GB really fast.

Satoshi already see this from miles aways the reason he want to add size little at a time, not 4mb, not 50mb or 1gb per transaction, Eth fall into the trap. Ark have this solution by split with delegate nodes.

It lost 9% in the last 24hrs on CoinMarketCap and still at $222 each so not exactly game over yet but it well could be soon

I read that the ethereum block size will reach one terabyte in the next few years. I doubt if it will be manageable, currently my laptop has one terabyte.

I hear stories about developers going to make a mini-me of the blockchain to make it more appealing to Joe Public

This kind of problem won't be an issue on the Ardor platform.

Good thing I change into my wallet into myetherwallet. It was first a requirement in regards compatibility in a campaign. So I have to change I think it is because of ERC20 i cant remember much.

I ran a poll and the users here voted 72% when i asked do you believe in Ethereum.
And most said NO but they trade it for profits.

So we already know that.. it was obvious all along.

This is why Pascalcoin is the future.   Funds are stored in account numbers which allows the transactions themselves to be trimmed from the block chain.  Keeps the block chain limited to around 6gb in size and increases anonymity since the paper trail eventually gets trimmed after a time.   Once the transaction is confirmed by enough nodes or miners there's no reason or need to keep a complete transaction record going back to the very beginning.  The account numbers hold the data while the addresses merely facilitate the transaction.

Ethereum should surely have a larger size as the supply is also more than that of bitcoin, there was surely a pre mined ico scam involved but you can't just give up on ethereum , if you do remember is was really close to beat bitcoin but just missed is because of various reasons. Syncing issues are surely there but you can use myetherwallet for that it is trusted and works perfectly

So overall most people who use ETH are happy with it, regardless of syncing issues?

A lot of FUD goes on about ethereum on this forum but I've yet to see any users that really complain about blockchain size or syncing time. The number one complaint has always been the same as that for bitcoin, scaling issues especially handling the mass transactions during big ICOs and they are working on fixing it much faster and better than bitcoin is.

The future is a preinstalled  Ethereum blockchain HDD's or SSD's.  Great addon  for your Fat Client.

I do not see that as a solution, there has to be something else happening to keep people happy.

Any estimation about the size of the ETH network if all the Bitcoin transactions were made in ETH instead of BTC?

And people talk like this is the miracle coin, and it is going to replace all others. Well, it certainly encompasses the biggest issues of all the other coins  :(

It just does not do it for me, I believe ETH is not the answer and better solutions will pop-up over time

And it manages to combine that with a price index that never gets anywhere, software changes that only do nothing or mess it up even more and not a single redeemable point to it.
