Title: Thoughts on Account Signing
Post by: Qunenin on July 11, 2017, 05:39:07 PM
Just a thought and comment on the account signing.  I put in a Bitcoin address in the profile when I first signed up or pretty close to then, but that address is nowhere near under my control anymore.  I am sure the wallet has nothing in it, but the passphrases or whatever I used on that wallet are long gone.  This is going to be true for most users on the forum and the veteran members know this.

You can always change the address to one that is under your control and you should probably do that as well. The address in your forum profile doesn't really mean much anyway.

There is also a forum topic for staking an address and signing a message to verify in case anything happens to your account in the future:

Most people hit the forums within the first month of active involvement in Bitcoin because the whole thing needs some explaining in one way or another when you are new and there are questions to be asked.

I also suggest you to do this and other user will quote it for you so in case that the hacker would delete your post with your address which you can sign a message for the proof that you own the account. The first or old address you have which you don't an access to it also doesn't mean much so might as well change the address you have in your profile so that other user who wish to donate to you can send Bitcoin to a valid address or you can just retain it if it really holds a sentimental value to you. It's up to you.

The new user has a wallet, online or software and is all proud of the first Bitcoin address and puts it on their profile.

Time passes and those first wallets come and go, as well as the enthusiasm of updating a Bitcoin wallet address on your profile when opening a new one.
