Title: I need cheap solutions for 6 - 7 card GPU
Post by: pornluver on July 12, 2017, 10:20:06 AM
My plan is to use some old 4 PCIE or 5 PCIE mobo with AM3 slot.

Then uses pcie 1-3 to add pcie slot.

Some people says it works.

I want to know the exact mobo that works for that.

I use A88X a pretty expensive mobo. However, it didn't work. It's very unstable.

using 1 to n pcie slots is not a good idea, buy asus prime z270A and play with 9 cards.

Asrock BTC is $150 at my country. Hmmm.... I can import one.

What about this?

I am using biostar TB250 BTC mobos. $150 each, works flawlessly out of the box with 6 GPU.
Honestly $80 or $150, it doesn't matter much. A few days of mining will make up for the price difference. Just get one that ships fast.

If you have nothing to add shut your asshole.

Anyway, anyone ever tried AM3 AMD board combined with pcie 1 to 3 and successfully pull this out with 6 or 7 GPU? Not 8. Just 6 or 7.

Speaking of mining revenue I see that price of etherium falls. Price of video card skyrocket. I do not see high return anymore for the time being  >:(

My a88x-g45 can detect 5 GPU. However, if I use this product, it can detect 6

ASRock H81 PRO BTC R2.0 - $80

Why do folks insist on recommending a board that has been OUT OF PRODUCTION AND IN VERY SHORT SUPPLY (when you can find them at ALL?) for 2+ years now?

For reference, Intel stopped making the chipset that board uses ballpark *4* years back.

By the time you add your splitter thing, and everything you need for it, the cost isn't much if any different than just going with a motherboard that is SPECIFICALLY made to handle 6+ cards, and you'll probably see better reliability if you don't use the splitter.

There WERE AMD AM3/AM3+ based motherboards made that could handle 6-7 cards out of the box - Gigabyte "-UD7" models were very popular during Litecoin GPU days for that reason - but I don't know of any are still in production, and I've never personally used any of them (my go-to board at this time is the ASRock 970 Extreme4, but it only has 5 PCI-E slots and I don't build riser rigs).

I am so glad at least one other person recognizes how silly it is to chase down such an old board when there are so many currently functional options.

Says who, you? The board is available and has been all week, which is why I recommended it as a cheap motherboard specifically made for mining with 6 cards. Do you have a better suggestion for a board in that price range that supports 6 cards and is available?

 The board is available WHERE?
 In what quantity?
Used, or refurb, or VERY LIMITED left over new stock from when they WERE still being made?

I have seen a LOT of links to that board for sale - only to turn up with "out of stock" notices when I got curious and checked them, or other folks check them and state "out of stock now".
It seems to be a good board for riser rigs *WHEN* you can get them, but it's not a good board to recommend when it hasn't been MADE for years, unless you're also going to recommend alternatives that ARE current production and have been more reliably available over the past year.

ASRock has put out some more recent "mining" targeted boards, but I don't pay much attention to them as I don't build riser rigs and couldn't care less how many PCI-E 1x slots a board has.

If you even bothered to click the link before posting your unhelpful nonsense you would see that. What I want is to mass produce those rigs. So I can afford research time.

Everybody here is giving bad advice.

Yes there are motherboards like the ASRock BTC Pro or the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 which can easily use 6 GPUs however you can't find those motherboards anywhere at decent prices. Trust me i've tried.

Most of these old AM3 motherboards which are almost half a decade old are selling more above MSRP even. At that stage you are better off just buying some newer modern motherboards which might be easier to resell in the future.

When I clicked the link right before my reply asking about WHERE it was available, it showed the board as "OUT OF STOCK".

When I clicked the link JUST NOW, it showed the board at $129.

 And you call ME clueless.

That's pretty cheap, even when I buy in bulk, my supplier from Hong Kong is more expensive.

ASRock has put out some more recent "mining" targeted boards, but I don't pay much attention to them as I don't build riser rigs and couldn't care less how many PCI-E 1x slots a board has.
Just a curiosity: by "I don't build riser rigs" do you mean you only connect gpus to full pci-e x16 (at least electrycally) slots?
So do you only get 2-3 gpus per rig / motherboard?

You are clueless or a troll. As I said in my response, the board has been and still is available on Newegg NEW for $80.

When I clicked the link right before my reply asking about WHERE it was available, it showed the board as "OUT OF STOCK".

 That's WHY I replied as I did.

When I clicked the link JUST NOW, it showed the board at $129.

 And you call ME clueless.

The Asrock H81 are still in stock for $80.

Did you even bother LOOKING at that link?

The H81 link YOU POSTED is showing the board at $129, NOT $80.

Just like during my LAST reply.

Yes, 3 GPUs per rig - 2 full length cards, and some sort of "short" card to let the middle card have at least ONE fan mostly clear to get some cooling to it, using the *physical* 16-bit PCI-E slots (which are usually 1 x 16, 1 x 8, and 1 x 4 electrically on most lower-cost motherboards but sometimes are 16/4/4 and often time that 16 electrically slot has to share PCI-E lanes with the second slot making the board 8/8/4 electrically in practice).

The actual price difference between a pair of 3 card rigs and a 6-card riser rig ends up not being a lot - no cost of risers, can get away with 2 PS that are a lot lower wattage and *usually* ends up being the same to a hair less then the 1 big PS for a 6-card rig (or you end up using a 2 PS setup with the same PS I'd be using) - and in some cases you have to get "creative" to get enough power connectors to POWER the risers, which adds some cost.
Keep in mind that for MOST mining rigs the majority of the cost is the GPUs themselves.

I do concede that a 6-card rig WILL usually cost a little less than a pair of 3 card rigs - but it's not all that big of a difference as a percentage, especially for those of us running NVidia rigs (or folks paying the recent GOUGE pricing on RX-series AMD cards), and I find the non-riser rigs tend to be more reliable.

Not sure on availability, but Gigabyte just announced a H110 based mining board - 1 PCI-E 16x slot, 5 PCI-E 1x slot, supposed to be $70.

Ars Technica had a review of it.
