Title: Risk management on Poloniex? Impossible or am I ignorant?
Post by: lukaexpl on July 12, 2017, 06:02:31 PM
How do you guys do it?

I found it to be impossible.

I made two trades and although both would have been winners I closed the first one at breakeven and the second one will incur a significant loss just because there are NO MECHANISMS to precisely define your entry targets, profit taking targets, stop losses etc.

First one was short selling BTS on margin at 6800 couple of days ago, the market moved in my favour, I had plenty of margin available but after trying to place protective stop I was greeted with
"Insufficient collateral available in your margin".
As a result I closed the position at break even because I had to leave the computer.

The second was after converting BTC to USDT yesterday preparing to buy back BTC if the price falls further (my long term goal) only to see the price fall significantly in the middle of the night without me being able to take profits.
I left only stop-loss overnight and when you do that you cannot place another take profit order with "one cancels other" logic on Polo. I thought placing stop-loss was more significant.

As a result the market has blown past my profit and entry into what will now be a significant loss.

Moral of the story I would not dare to place another trade on Polo with stolen money.

My question is:
a) How do you guys manage your risk without usual protective measures in place?
b) Am I missing some important piece of the puzzle?

Thanks

What is the point of this forum?  ???

752nd reincarnation of "oh no my altcoins is getting dumped" gets 3 pages eaches time but a legitimate question just gets ignored.

So is it:

1. TLDR

2. you did not ask the question clearly enough

3. nobody actually trades, we are just full of s..t

4. we dont let you in on our little secrets of the trade

5. polo sucks

other exchanges have a take-profit option for margin trading

While I have traded on Polo, I have never used margin trading. I only trade with my available balance.

Also, I generally don't play with stop-loss feature. I just buy at low entry point, place a sell order at desired exit point and leave it for a week. I continue watching price every few hours and if I feel like it's taking a nose dive, I just cancel the sell order and place a new one at break-even price.
