What is Artcoin About?

Artcoin is a value token built on the Ethereum network with the purpose of bringing fine art and new art to everyone.  Today, the art market is not accessible.  Artcoin will open access to that market.  Artcoin will be the future of how Art is bought, traded, tracked, accessed, valued, and authenticated.

• With the ICO, we will acquire investment grade work that will appreciate in value
• Your tokens would not only be exchange tradable but could be used to buy work out of the collection for your personal collection
• Our coin supply will only increase to grow the collection and will be offered at progressively more expense rates to insure the interests of token holders are maintained and the value of their tokens grows.

IMO you will find it hard to bring crypto people to fine art.
You are trying to mach a specialized niche with... specialized niche. Narrowing your potential customers.

I believe you are very much correct.  The Utility of the coin will be a very special niche.  We hope the Crypto community sees the Economic value in diversifying their coin and token strategies and that the utility of the coin (ie being the purchasing token for appraised and increasingly value work) can produce some balance to tokens and coins with no value at all.  Finally, we hope that this effort can expand the utility of blockchain as a whole and bring all new buyers into the mix.  We would love some feedback and advice around what the cryto community would like to see to strengthen the value proposition for them - please chime in with feedback if you can!

In regards to the Night Watch, if I am not mistaken, it is part of the Rijksmuseum collection.  If the  Rijksmuseum would choose to sell it to us or at auction, we would have to acquire it using funds raised.  Lets say we where to buy it for 20m euro, you would be able to buy it for the artcoin equivalent (the going public exchange rate) - that is assuming you wanted to hang it in your living room.  If we did not buy it but  Rijksmuseum wanted to auction it through our platform,  it would go to the highest bidder (in artcoin regardless of the going rate).  In either case, we would store the ownership record in the blockchain so if someone created a forgery, there would be a public record that only you and you alone own Night Watch.  

You would also be able to buy a digital print for a few artcoin and view it in your gallery.  

That said,  Rijksmuseum will probably not be selling us the Night Watch.  Our arts council and token holders will select, vote and set a willingness to pay for works offered through auction houses, galleries and directly from artists.  (we have reached out to a handful of living artists like Jeff Koons to start the conversations around potentially offering their work through artcoin) - so while the Night Watch may not end up in your house or in the artcoin collection, you can feel confident that the works that do will be of equal economic and cultural value (in terms of relevance and growth)

Interesting project but I have few questions. If for example the art is priced at this x amount of artcoin, exchange happens and artist gets x amount, then suddenly artcoin price at the market goes down, then artist feels his work is devalued? And problem with eth is scaling issue and gas price. Have you considered using waves? Im interested yet curious.

Just because the value of Ether goes down does not mean the value of Artcoin will go down. That is, if the price of the currency is expressed in ART/USD. In the scenario that ETH/USD declines and you wanted to make a trade of ART -> ETH, it will always just take as much ETH as necessary to == that amount in USD. Hopefully that makes sense.

I don't necessarily see Ether's current scaling issues as a long-term challenge to the project.

The smart contract allocates about 4% of the total minted Artcoins at the end of the sale that will be distributed for bounties and to advisors. We haven't published the bounty program yet, formally, but will in the coming days. If you want to get involved now, send a message to OP (ArtcoinMike).

@KeyMaster - I think Kyle got it right. I will add that depending on the circumstances, the artist may opt to get compensated in artcoin or have that artcoin converted to a fiat during the sale.  Since the art has an intrinsic value linked to the market and assuming we have an efficient market, his/her work would never be devalued due to currency risk.  If the artist chooses to hold artcoin, he/should would benefit from gains or take the losses from currency fluctuation, at that point, holding artcoin is the same as holding a foreign exchange note and subject to market fluctuations.

Why do they need to do an ICO for a project like this? It looks like they are looking for a quick buck instead of trying to get Artists and the such to show their work to the world.

So you are trying to make a Marketplace so people could sell and purchase items through it, people won’t care that much about it since they could already use Bitcoin and other Altcoins instead of using Artcoin.

You missed the most important component.  70% of the funds will be directed by our arts council and investment team to purchase investment grade art for a portfolio.  The kind of work we are buying is not the kind of work most people can afford.  You are talking about a marketplace for people who want to feature crafts for their aesthetic and decorative value.  The work we are buying needs to have analysis from an investment perspective to insure it can grow in value.  We will have a marketplace down the line and it is absolutely not something that todays bitcoin or ether can serve.  One of the biggest problems in the art market is verifying authenticity and that will only be possible for works purchased through our marketplace.  The blockchain will record a ledger / ownership record of the origination and transfer of the works insuring they can retain their economic value. 

In the past few years, even great auction houses like Sotheby's have been susceptible to authenticity fraud and ownership rights disputes.  Artcoin will make that a thing of the past, in a 60b/year market, it is long overdue.

The artwork will only be acquired after the ICO - we need to base a portfolio buy on the amount of funds we have available.  We will be providing a list of work to token holders from which to vote on.  The work will be a selection of works that is coming up for auction or in galleries / artists that are likely to grow in value.  The selection of the pool will be determined by an arts council which we are currently recruiting to include experts in arts valuation.  An arts valuation consultant may be retained to insure the work selection is in the best interests of our token holders.

Art coin is minted by smart contract only during the sales.  The total supply of coin at the end of the sale will be equal to the amount sold plus 30 coins per 100 to distribute for talent acquisition, advisor and management incentives.  Future coin sales will follow the same structure.  Our economics advisor and council are set up to insure we do not create any dilution risk in the structure of the consortium of future smart contracts but ultimately, any future funds raised or coins minted would be spent exactly the same way to insure we retain the token value.

We plan on developing an on-chain authenticity solution for physical art, and a DRM solution for digital art. I believe that is what you were asking.

When did this project start running?

We have been building smart contracts, token and materials for around 2 months.  The project was conceptualized in 2014

It's a good idea to add value from the art itself, one can easily find what he likes in terms of art, history of art, and how art is created, I think this is one of the brightest projects

I am also interested in this coin. How to join the bounty and is any bounty option available for the coin.

Well i think the projects on China is just for local costumers on there, but the artcoin is for all of peoples around the world, so they sell the ICOs on ethereum's platform, it will be biggest than the projects on China, that is different with artcoin' projects on the marketing target and the growing up the projects.

There is a company that is already utilizing blockchain tech to track the buy/sale of fine art. I also notice that there seems to be a lack of anybody in the actual arts on your team. I have a degree in Fine Art, not that you should hire me, but it is curious that an Artcoin doesn't have people actually in the arts advising.

We have several prominent advisors who are absolutely part of the project and the project lead has an arts background, BFA in Fine Arts, Curatorial experience etc...

I do not fully understands how this can be done but i can see that the dev have taking a bold steps towards this innovative project, some art work costs over $1,000,000 which i am pretty sure about and some are simply priceless.

I shall need to read the project whitepaper to know how this can be fully achieved.

The art market has always been a very distant and inaccessible market for me personally. Even to this day I am clueless as to how you actually purchase an artwork. Perhaps in the future I will be able to using art coin.

I must criticize your web presentation, it should be more artistic, or should i say professionally done. Concept is good and need for such token exists. Put more efforts in Marketing and you can expect more in return. So far we didn't had a chance to see anything similar. Good Luck!

I am finding myself in great place right now that's artcoin. It is completely different concept than any other ICO found until now. Preserving art and giving it a scope is brilliant idea by artcoin. I'm amazed by reading the fact that you are escrowing 70% of funds for advertising platform and growth of the ICO. This is pretty cool guys, hope to see you in long run.

Took art appreciation in school, that's as far as my art experience goes, but I have read that major works of art have been one of the best investment classes for quite a while now.  So I do hope this project bears good fruit; it seems very interesting.

As an art enthusiast, having a platform for art combine with the technology of blockchain is indeed wonderful. I'm not really keen on looking at platforms where I can buy and sell artworks so it's really nice to see one at a place where I am interested as well. I'm looking forward to invest both some of my money and time to be a part of this wonderful community we will have.

I'll be watching this topic for sure, interested in how this coin will progress. Hope that there will be functionality to help artists of all kinds, it seems to have a focus predominately on fine art (which too often is only consumed by rich people).

I went to search at the service section under market place but didn't find the bounty link, can you provide it please?

Is the sale a bust? The ethscan address looks like no one invested in it? Maybe the ideas aren't communicated clearly enough, or cryptonerds don't care about art.

The crypto address is the contract address, transactions can be seen in the escrow address linked from the contract.

Unfortunately, we didn't do a very good job marketing this sale and didn't raise nearly enough to get going.  We have refunded any tokens purchased and are regrouping to think about how to proceed.  Any help or suggestions are much appreciated.
