Title: Are my bitcoins safe in blockchain.info?
Post by: Shawns on July 14, 2017, 04:00:51 PM
Are my bitcoins safe in online wallet www.blockchain.info for what happens on August 1?

I have my private keys & my account is fully secured.

I really need to know this :)

I think yes.
Even if they *may* something stupid, the only real problem is that they get hacked.
Otherwise, we will just see how the landscape would be after Aug, 1 and choose another online wallet if anything is screwed with blockchain.info

Probably not. Your coins were never safe with blockchain.info anyways since they continuously have security and usability issues anyways. If a chain split happens, you won't be able to decide on which chain you want to transact on, blockchain.info will choose that for you.

I agree the best place for secured coins is an offline wallet or paper wallet otherwise always risk is present.

It is true that blockchain.info has had security and usability issues in that past, but unlike exchanges and other wallet sites, you have 100% control over your private keys.

If blockchain.info doesn't have the features you want, can always move your private keys to a wallet that does at any time before or after a fork.

@Shawns, if you control your private keys, then your bitcoins are not affected by a fork until you decide to spend them.

So you have the private keys already then I guess its really okay to use them, but I'm not recommending them since blockchain, info users have too many issues about that wallet. Just make sure you will not spend any amount stored on that wallet or even received on that very moment from 12 hours before August 1 and after without prior updates from those who knows technically.

Yup. I would worry if I have my coins deposited in blockchain.info by Aug 1. Just what others have suggested, lately blockchain.info has a lot of issues regarding their wallet that's why its not "safe" to used it in my opinion. You said you have the private keys so you are all good. I really don't know what happened to blockchain.info wallet though, used to be one of the best wallet out there, but now they have security issues popping from time to time.

Remove your coins to any other place than blockchain.info.

Not only is unsafe because people behind it are retards without skills but also main FUDster ROGER VER is part of it.

Just google past screw ups thanks to them and make your mind with where u store your money.

It depends how much you have. I think they have been hacked in the past, not sure, but if it's true then other risks are there too.

Losing money based on hacks, bugs ,exploits could all happen.

I think people should just download Electrum and store their BTC there for the time being.

Your coins are never safe if you do not have them on a local machine. Also you need to have the private keys and passphrase control.

If blockchain.info takes down their site wouldn't you not be able to withdraw?

Blockchain.info don't give control of private keys, this function was removed when they released new version of website. You only can to import private keys to blockchain.info wallet.

Your blockchain.info account 12 word recovery phrase is the "seed" that is used to generate all your private keys. It can be used by other compatible wallets, such as Trezor. You can move your blockchain.info wallet to another wallet at any time for any reason.

In online wallet anytime suspicious activity may be happened. In the case, online wallet like blockchain.info storing bitcoins worth up to 10% of the total amount may good idea. Overall, such of these wallets a greater risk has been hacked.

They are safe if you not touch it during this whole disturbance.
Keeping bitcoins in a online wallet is not safe in general.

You should download software wallet and use it. Its safer.

I don't think you are safe with the blockchain , since blockchain is official wallet of the Bitcoin but it is  only the wallet which handle your transaction , but after the hardfork , may be two chains can't be classify by the blockchain wallet .
So it will be more better to use direct address which has the private key for your Bitcoin address and you can handle them at every step without facing any problem .
But if you don't want to put your btc in blockchain , then go at the settings >> address > create new address > create new address and deposit Bitcoin at the new address and also make export the private key and copy the privacy practices key at safe place where no one can reach easily .
You can also use mysellium wallet also which is available at play store to download at Android platform .

You can use mycellium android wallet to keep your btc safe for August split.
It is best and easiest option available to those not want to download bitcoin core.

no. because you access it through a computer or phone and either of those can easily be compromised. you might have 2fa. that can be compromised too. it's only as safe as your best practices and they're not gonna be best enough.

Yes, also note that imported addresses are not backed up by the seed. You need to first transfer the funds you have in your improted addresses into blockchain address.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Although you have many ways to secure your coin on a non-exchange platform but It doesn't mean you are in 100 percent of security. So you should separate amount of your coin into parts and keep it on multiple wallets from different platforms.

Blockchain wallet is safe as long as you kept your password and the 12 words to recover your wallet offline. But it is more secure to get pc wallet with your parivate keys.

That makes it safer for the bitcoin users because wallet companies are the ones responsible for selecting the right chain for their users.

I don't trust Blockchain.info that much. They used to be the best online wallet out there, but their reputation has gone down the drain during the recent months. If you are having significant amounts of BTC, then I'd advice you to hold them in a hardware wallet, than in Blockchain.info.

Supposedly, you can recover it using this utility (https://iancoleman.github.io/bip39/)  to convert the phrase into your private keys. I haven't tested it myself but I found it from this post. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1488375.msg15008846#msg15008846)

Relatively, you have control over the private keys but it might be a bit of a challenge utilizing them versus a full client.
A better option though if your aiming for a lightweight client.

On Tuesday, 1st August 2017, the endorsement of bitcoin may become unreliable for an indefinite period of time. This means that any bitcoins you receive after that time can then then disappear from your wallet or be a bitcoin type that others will not accept payment.
When the situation is resolved, the validation point will automatically return to normal confidence or there will be two competing versions of Bitcoin (or more). In the previous case, you can return to using Bitcoin normally; In the latter case, you will need to take additional steps to start getting safely bitcoins.  :-[ :-[

No.

Because we don’t know or store your password (we can’t even reset it), only you are able to unlock and decrypt your wallet.

As long as you keep your private keys. That's alright IMO. Because they don't completely have control over your bitcoins. Just make sure you keep your private keys in a safe place. But if you are hesitating. Use offline wallets which gives you more security. Use cold wallets or paper wallets. Online wallets are not ideal wallet to store large amounts of bitcoins. Because we don't know what they think. They can just close your account or they can just turn into a scam. If were in your position. I will chose offline wallets. It's your btc anyway. It's up to you how to keep it safe.

Quite an interesting conversation over there.

Which wallet would you recommend the most guys ?

I see lot of people complaining about blockchain.info wallet, and well I do know about online wallets in general.

I had Multibit, and from time to time...Either multibit was broken, or recently multibit wasnt event able to recognise my passphrase and I wasnt able to get my fund.

Since I had the wallet words, I was able to recover my fund using blockchain.info private key importing and blablabla.

From my experience, I had more issues with the hardware multibit wallet than blockchain info.

My question is, instead of bashing a wallet or another, let's talk about the solution, which wallet would you recommend the most for storing BTC while august 1st panic will go on ?

Thank you.

If you were really that curious, it would've been better to open a new thread, you currently are bumping a thread that has been dead for over a week.

Either way, Roger Ver was i'd say co-owner / Majority investor of blockchain.info, https://www.coindesk.com/roger-ver-blockchain-past-present-future/ One of the first investors.

This was back in 2014. I am not sure if he still owns it / sold it.

Your post was totally useless, and also, totally wrong.

An online wallet can still be 99.99 ( 100)% safe, aslong as you can verify you're the only one with the private keys.

Paper / Client are i'd say 99.999% safe in terms of overall security of the software. Unless you get ratted there is no way you'd lose your bitcoins. Brute force is something that really doesn't exist.

Paper is paper. how can anyone get to something you wrote down? How is that "just" 50% safe?

I've heard it's better to actually have a software or hardware wallet rather than an online one. If you have either of those you will always have 100% control over your bitcoin. If the blockchain.info site were to go down you will probably lose access to your coins. Better safe than sorry ;)

It's not just limited to the special incident like 1 Aug but in general, it is not recommended to keep the funds on any web wallet or exchange because there is always a risk associated with it when you keep funds anywhere other than your control. You can use the paper wallet to hodl your Bitcoins for the mid or long term and if you do have frequent transactions then you can try hardware wallet like a Trezor to maintain 100% control of your funds.
