Title: Bitcoin Core Error Message
Post by: Hhampuz on July 18, 2017, 05:07:14 PM
So I fired up the core client today after a couple of days having it turned off.

Once the blockchain was loaded up and it was ready to go I noticed (for the first time) an error message stating the following: "Warning: Unknown block versions being mined! It's possible unknown rules are in effect".

What does this mean? Are there already posts regarding this? Am I not running the latest core version and is that what's prompting this error message?

I don't want to spread panic or inform people with faulty information but yeah, I'm curious more than anything.

When more than 50 of the last 100 blocks have a version number that Bitcoin Core doesn't expect, it triggers that warning message.

Because miners are now capable of signalling for BIP 91, many have started mining blocks which support it.

This part of SegWitx2 won't cause a chain split though, so it's okay.

Achow101 made a post about this here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2027513.msg20199029#msg20199029).

Thanks for letting me know and thank you for sharing the link, will read up some more about it after skimming through it. At least this removes any fear that may have been present in the back of my head and it does still my curiosity. Will lock this thread soon as there may be more people asking the same questions as I.

Just setup bitcoin-core 2014 https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/releases/tag/v0.9.1 while it still available for download.
Bitcoin-core developers not trustable anymore, too many political interests, money and speculations.

Just run the current version.  Using a version several years old - while possible - doesn't get the benefits that 0.10, 0.11, 0.12, 0.13 and 0.14 have implemented including HD wallets, faster syncing etc. see:

I'd rather not run an old and outdated version of the core client, viable or not. I'd also not prefer to start a discussion regarding motives of any members of the core team. We have threads for that already I believe.

Just checked back on my client and saw that I am in fact running the latest version, which has been working amazingly well ever since I got it.

have implemented including HD wallets, faster syncing etc. see:

Also new errors, code for fork, and some unpredictable staff.
I have no trust to bitcoin-core developers anymore.
All this panic about 1 august influenced by bitcoin-core developers.
My recommendation: setup bitcoin-core 2014 https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/releases/tag/v0.9.1 and wait until everything clears up.

This warning appear because you're using bitcoin core, right now most miners are setting bit 4 of the block to signaling segwit2x, read here http://www.coindesk.com/bip91-begins-bitcoins-miners-signal-segwit2x-scaling-proposal-early/
Yes, there was an explanation about what you concern https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2027513.0
Fortunately, it consider as normal and not a hardfork, so our coins still safe. Be prepared and export your private keys.

I got the same message when I fired up my wallet (V 13.2). Will the new version of BitCore fix this or do we have to wait till things get settled?
