Title: Official Launch: Bitcoins For Charity
Post by: nhodges on June 21, 2011, 03:34:59 AM
Some of you may have seen this on KRADMINER.COM, Reddit or other social networks during our soft launch on Friday, however it's officially here: Bitcoins For Charity (http://bitcoinsforcharity.org)! BTC4C is a COMPLETELY non-profit website aimed at aggregating charitable organizations that officially accept donations via Bitcoin, and making it easy for users of BTC4C to donate or mine for a charity. So head on over to www.bitcoinsforcharity.org (http://bitcoinsforcharity.org) and check us out! If you like what we're doing, please spread the word!

BITCOINS FOR CHARITY NEED YOUR HELP!

As you can tell, we only have THREE charities listed on our website. That's because we only feature charities that accept BTC donations on their own behalf. We don't want to have to be facilitate exchanging funds, we built this website for one purpose: to make the world a better place. We don't accept donations on the behalf of any party, bottom line. But we've begun taking steps to inform charities about Bitcoin, and that first step is getting the word out. You can help us by sending this flyer evangelizing Bitcoin (http://bitcoinsforcharity.org/flyer.pdf) and its use. Feel free to Photoshop your TradeHill referral URL somewhere on the PDF, if you want.

http://bitcoinsforcharity.org/inc/img/bitcoinsforcharity-flyer.jpg (http://bitcoinsforcharity.org/flyer.pdf)

You can also help out by following us at any of one/all of our social networks:
  • Facebook: Bitcoins For Charity (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bitcoins-For-Charity/213001988737222)
  • Twitter: Bitcoins For Charity (http://twitter.com/btc4c)
BTC4C is currently not accepting donations/tips, as I'm not at my office and don't want to generate a tip address on my personal wallet. Donate to a charity instead!

BTC4C is a COMPLETELY non-profit website
Please clear up for me "BTC4C is a 20% project by Geekworks, LLC", I don't understand.

Stupid idea, or maybe a scam. If a charity accepts btc why would we send them to you first. It doesnt pass my scatch test.

I think you didn't read the web site.  He isn't accepting donations. :-)  This isn't a charity clearing house, but a site to encourage charities to accept direct bitcoin donations.  The charities can sign up there to tell people that they'll accept the donations, and then people go to that charity to donate.  I assume that anybody on the Internet has the sense to check out the charity before donating -- CharityNavigator.org is your friend -- and to ensure that the URL that is provided on the site goes to that charity and not some phish/scam site.

I guess that threw me off.

BTC4C is a COMPLETELY non-profit website
Please clear up for me "BTC4C is a 20% project by Geekworks, LLC", I don't understand.

20% project stems from the philosophy of 80%/20%

80/20 ideology being you're only productive about 80% of the time, so why not use the other 20% to do something useful or that you want to, instead of just browsing the internet (which is what I would be doing, you can replace internet for any other method of slacking off)

@iMiner the font used in the advertisement is the Ubuntu font, which you can find linked in the Bitcoin vector graphics thread: http://forum.bitcoin.org/?topic=1756.0

No problem! Now the other questions and comments:

Stupid idea, or maybe a scam. If a charity accepts btc why would we send them to you first. It doesnt pass my scatch test.

I'll whip something up in the morning!

A banner for the signatures would be great. I would put in mine.

You don't send them to us, we ONLY list charities that have their own Bitcoin donation address. We do NOT want to handle your Bitcoins. (Currently, we don't even have a tip/donation address on the website.)

I did these really quick, but they turned out decent imo, I enjoyed the tag lines.

I always new that the best and fastest way to legitimize btc transactions worldwide to the average people would be for major charities to get involved and accept bitcoin. It would obviously make sense for a non profit to accept payment in any shape and size they can if it has any value and it is liquid. This ease of entry vs a normal business is pretty big deal not to mention the publicity that comes from this will reflect positively.

I appreciate your efforts to become an advocate of bitcoin to charities and helping them setup a way to accept them. I only see this as win win for everyone and the community should help drive traffic to this site any way they can. Once the charities all over the world realize how real btc is one by one, btc will become that much closer to becoming a world wide currency for the people.

Dude, you're the man. I touched them up a little bit and added them to the website's "Spread the Word" page, do you have another website besides BitcoinPorn I can give you a link back to?

I sadly have too many sites, but I am here representing Bitcoin Porn only, so I accept when I am not accepted on all sites (http://z1x.dk/2011/06/i-got-featured-on-bitcoin-porn/) ;)

Anyways, it is for charity and I have been looking to do some banners/headers for some people promoting Bitcoin, can't get any better than people asking for graphics for their signatures :)    Honestly glad you liked them and definitely glad you cleaned them up, that was during my lunch hour real quick.

No problem, thank you so much for the banners, if you have any other sites you're trying to get link juice to, pm me I'm sure I can help you out. Hehe, I got back from my lunch break early to work on the banners and they were done already; you let me get a little slacker time in today, thanks!

Very cool, but do they know about EFF's decision?  They should probably ask counsel before agreeing, honestly.

I am not really joking.   I think this might keep the Bitcoin user more in mind who is inclined to give up their coin based on something they may relate to.

Fantastic project! I've made a donation to recycles.org.

Also, you should put up copies of the letters you've sent out, make it public.

What is "KRAD"?

KRAD are the links to kradminer.com, a web based miner which shut down earlier this week. I am working to find a suitable way to have a web-based option for visitors of BTC4C who wish to mine in their browser for charitable organizations.

http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=3454 ?

I am not really joking.   I think this might keep the Bitcoin user more in mind who is inclined to give up their coin based on something they may relate to.

Sweet, NORML accepts BTC donations!? I will be adding them, then, for sure. :]

Fantastic project! I've made a donation to recycles.org.

Also, you should put up copies of the letters you've sent out, make it public.

I posted a picture of one of the letters I sent out this week, I will start taking more pictures and maybe even add a section on the website for a gallery.

Great project!

Btw. "but only recently have exchange marketplaces exchange marketplaces" ?

Whoops, forgot to fix the thumbnail. I corrected the PDF earlier this week, though, so that's all good to send out! I'll upload a new thumbnail today.

We've added two more charities to our list, the FreedomBox Foundation (http://freedomboxfoundation.org/) and Vaizard Institute (http://vaizard.org), both great projects who haven't received much attention!

There is a statement on the picture that the bitcoins need to be traded for fiat.  This is not true.  They could buy something with those bitcoins.  For example they may be able to pay someone to do work on their website.

Hi!

Nice work. Can you add us to your site?

Tor is a free software that helps people from totalitarian states with censored Internet to access the Internet anonymously and uncensored. It is estimated to have over 500,000 daily users. Tor needs people to share their bandwidth and run relays and so-called "exit nodes". Torservers.net will use the money donated to run high bandwidth Tor exit nodes.
