Title: Why do ICO Companies Continue to use Slack?
Post by: Urban Crypto on July 23, 2017, 01:35:11 PM
I want to begin by saying that the Slack app is a very valuable application and allows for the management of community communications in an orderly and efficient manner.  The community manager can set various channels within their slack channel that allows segregated posts, some allowed for the company only and some for general participation.

I started joining various slack channels as I started following ICOs as it is the easiest way to get real time information from the company.  The companies have moderators that are available to answer all kinds of questions and concerns.  From missing contributions to just questions about the ICO, they can answer.
It has also been a big tool for me as a blogger and writer about ICOs to get accurate data from the company directly.

Slack and Security Issues

Built in the slack application, is the slackbot which can send messages to you directly.  What has been happening is that the slackbot is sending scammy messages in these groups.  Posting incorrect ETH addresses and asking you to take some action not authorised by the company.  They have been guilty of massive phishing.

The simple question is, why do these companies continue to use Slack as the manner of communication if this issue is known.  I spoke to the CEO of one of the current ICOs and he said that it is difficult to migrate the slack participants to another solution.  He added that there really is not another solution that meets the requirements.  He had already turned off the slackbot functionality.

We will have to see if companies continue to use this app for their communities and communicating with them in the future.  Is there a comparable app out there?  There has to be a better solution.

Just my thoughts.

There are plenty of messaging apps out there. It all depends on what the dev team is comfortable using. We have a Slack, but no one really liked it so we switched. Slack is great but I'm not sure it's an order of magnitude greater than any other messaging app. I also think there is a certain perception that having a Slack channel makes you more legitimate in the eyes of the community, which is extremely unfortunate.

On slack, you don't just wonder around and find projects like you could let's say here, on this forum. No, the only people joinning slack channels are ones who are interested in a specific project.

So there are no bystanders or just random people not familiar with a project popping up. Only people who agree with the project and people who disagree gets piled on and banned (which is why I'd guess it's sole wildly used for ICOs as the voice of reason or opposition can be silenced or ignored easier).

That makes it a terrible hugbox.

And it's also terrible feature-wise. Starting with the terrible search system which makes finding relevant info in the sea spam, circlejerk and just general noise just annoyingly hard.

We had to set it up because everyone else uses it :) Personally, I passionately hate Slack, maybe not the grand idea of it as open end collab tool, but horrible implementation...

Are you stating that hackers are able to hack into the respective Slack community and perpetrate themselves as the SlackBot and send scam related questions?  Can you expand more on this?

For ICO we need a platform where the admins have options to ban ETH addresses to be shared. I don't know if any of them is out there but there must a software banning adresses starting with 0x there.

I believe that slack is suitable for communication and sharing information. moreover, you can easily talk to someone you like on slack and cause of that reason, many ICOs love to use slack. However, there are some exception which people using slack in order to make the Scam ICOs look real so that they can easily steal people money

ICO companies use Slack for faster communications, for faster updates and other news that can help the campaign participants to cope up.

they should move to discord, it will give them more control , but you know if you have a lot of members how could you convince them to move to another app ( only Amanda B. Johnson can do hhhh )

It's a trendy heap of bullshit from kids i refuse to get involved with.
I would rather stuff my balls in a meat grinder than go Slack with millennial douche's.

And control ?
I go to IRC with no mods maybe why ? control ? LOL

There is your answer.. so they can weed out the scam participants.
ICO = SCAM.

Slack app is one of the oldest group chatting software that many people are used to due to its famous, ico companies shall prefer it because they feel most people has it or knows it however there are so many alternatives to slack that are even better than slack.

It ties community all together. They've been using slack for their startup as well and it is pretty powerful to keep communication going back and forth.

It's targeting the community and reducing time-wasting on reading pointless topics.

My other guess is to fight cheaters and multi accounting  bounty hunters. Like if Slack could report to admins IP collusion and also its requiring a valid mail.

I think its because its easy for people to use slack than other type of messaging. But I know there are more better way to do this than slack (and I also hate that slackbot). At my first time using slack I already know what to do :D maybe thats whats most ICO are thinking.

There have been many fake messages sent by slackbot.  It does seem that hackers are phishing through a way into slack.  So i would say yes.

Seeing the events yesterday is true many problems that occur due to the slackbot. It is very difficult for us to eradicate phishing and such things if we do not cooperate. Dev and team must have the same wallet address on the website, or in the social media group all must be the same (one address) if not the same means that there is something awkward and we fellow users should dare report to the organizer and also share that information to other users to Make sure no one sends the funds to the wrong wallet address.

I'am sorry if my opinion is wrong, please correct.

I thought the slackbot scams were users naming themselves "Slackbot" at least this is a variation I have definitely encountered first hand.  It is not an easily replaced app, for sure.   Apps like Telegram require lining to your personal cell phone number, which for me is useless since my fiance used my phone number for his ACTIVE telegram account.  If I try to sign in to telegram its all his messages with his contacts.  Lame!   Slack has been amazing for collaborations in general and makes it super easy to do the opposite of "slack off".

Hope the bots with scams at their core fade... but I am always careful anyway.

Cheers!

Simple hack for slack: the team owner can set the #general channel so that only admins can post.

Well in my own view Slack have been used because if its accessibility and the comfort that it gives from it users and its been a while now on this kind of communication app and I do somehow see that others are just going with the flow or on the trend on using this. I barely see some do make use of telegram even discord or zoom which would really depend on what would really suit them best.

I personally think they are just lazy to look for a more safe app and since slack is free and of course in trend, that may be one of the reasons why ICO's would prefer using slack than any other apps. And it is accessible to use and so easy even 8 year olds would know how to use it and because of its simplicity.

I like slack features and comfortable with using it. The annoying part is obviously the scammers trying all sort of ways to disturb the slack users.

because Slack is safe & private but i prefer developers to use open system as redd or social media chatting platform best to be open more to public to convince them to buy tokens .

Are there any other alternatives? - I know in Slack you can have private channels? Also Telegram - but is there a way in ANY platform to get rid of spammers? -- Or should it just be common sense?

I've seen ICO companies that are  now not including slack to be part of their community management. They choose either discord or telegram and thanks to the warning from hundreds of hacking incidents caused on slack app.

I think using slack or telegram is one of the palatfrom ways to open a chat that aims for the success of their project more personal than twitter and facebook media. But facebook and twitter can not be eliminated in the ICO world because they are a place to promote campaigns that can be seen by the public

You got your answer directly from your source, they are too comfortable using slack and that is why they do not want to stop using it, people get scammed but at the end the developers are not the ones getting scammed and most of them could care less about what happens to their tokens after they already got their money, the real question is why people keep accepting to use slack instead of the ANN thread in the forum.
