Title: Alternatives to Bitcoin
Post by: TekStart on May 13, 2013, 07:57:56 PM
Besides Bitcoin, I have also heard of Lightcoin. How many other digital currencies are there in the market?

We need to look at our 2nd generation machine and see if we need to target these other digital currencies.

Thanks

You can always check the various exchanges, to see what coins are available for trade.

Many coins are hard to spend but easier to mine than btc. Depends what you're looking to do.

Litecoin.org and PPCoin.org are 2 alternatives to Bitcoin. As others mentioned above, they are easier to mine, have faster approvals times with merchants but may be harder to spend.

the most important factor in alternatives to BTC are support and a community.
I found FTC seems to be very good.

I think that Litecoins for little payments will be used most.

Anyone (with the technical skills) could create their own crypto-currency but it needs to be recognized by enough others to be viable.  Right now Bitcoin is dominant.  Each new BTC owner adds to the value of all the other bitcoins in the community so I would expect it to become a natural "monopoly" displacing all other similar currencies unless something fundamentally better comes along which would require another act of genius by someone.  Until then I expect BTC to dominate and crush all other crypto-currencies, not because it is any better, but because it is a bigger and more recognized standard.  Remember the very good VHS video standard wone out against Beta and 8mm.  It wasn't better, it was simply more established and was still very good.  That's how I think Bitcoin will win out.
