Hosted by a comedian? The irony.

Yeah, I heard the same thing. I know they have recently taken a position of several million USD in Bitcoin, but I'm uncertain how long they've been involved in Bitcoin. Seems like an odd choice. I would have preferred someone like Marc Andreesson. His position in Ripple infers that he probably has spent an enormous amount of time studying the entire p2p crypto market. He also has to do a bit of work selling Ripple to the community. Seemed like a much better fit.

Comedians are often hosts for serious events including presidential dinners.  It's entertainment which can be a nice prelude for all of the following, serious speakers.  I don't find it odd at all.

Hosts are not keynotes. Bill Gates is a keynote not Conan

Wait, so you work for the main sponsor of the conference and you don't think anything is wrong? Thank you for your unbiased opinion.  ::)

It's as much ironic as it is hypocritical. The "super serious" conference is hosted by a clown, yet they frown on forum members (like myself) enjoying themselves and having fun while doing serious business.

I'm so bored of bitcoin sometimes. The people in it are just getting far too predictable and stale.

This. I have been to several conferences, several with comedians. There is usually at least some entertainment.

I thought the plural was spelled Winkelvii

Huh? The hosts/MCs at most corporate conferences are often comedians or at least tell a lot of jokes...

Why is the button to register with dollars above the bitcoin option? way to not promote bitcoin as the primary option.

It's just the "Kickoff Party" Friday night. I don't see anything wrong with having semi-celebrities and a comedian. Any press will be more likely to get sound bites at this than at anything else. Having some recognizable names is a good way to solidify the existence of Bitcoin in the mind of the general public.

The real meat of the conference will be Saturday and Sunday, anyway.

Fair enough!

Yeah but at 10PM on friday night we get to all go watch Star Trek Into Darkness. Could we be any more nerd?!?!?

EDIT: I'm not kidding. :-)

Because people like me would rather unload our rapidly depreciating fiat in exchange for goods and services, and hoard the precious Bitcoin. See also: Gresham's Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gresham%27s_law).

Gresham's Law (which is just a vanity label for a consequence of plain-old-arbitrage) applies to two forms of currency which are both legally accepted by a government entity, so BTC doesn't qualify.

I don't care about the relative position (above or below) on the registration page; the damning part is that the denomination is in USD rather than BTC ($350 USD on the day of registration, "BTC rate determined that day"). I'll be at Bitcoin2013 myself, so hopefully someone will bring it up at one of the panels as a lead-in to the discussion around price stability / store of value issues.

(Also, their countdown clock is wrong; it's mapped to midnight PDT on Friday morning, when it should be later in the day when registration or the keynote starts.)

Yes, this really jumped into my eye, too  :D

I bet this will get a note in almost ever newspaper that reports about the conference.

... and after several hours of talking about how to bring down the Central Banks, the "evil geniuses" looked for guidance through Mister Spock  :P

Don't get the point with the comedian though. That's a common and good way to start a conference.
