Title: AMD stock going up, due to alot of people buying radeon cards for mining?
Post by: FreedomCoin on May 13, 2013, 09:38:11 PM
I just heard on some MSM TV channel that AMDs stock is going up and up right now, in about the last 3 months. Could anyone speculate this is due to more GPU miners coming into the game?

The news station stated its due to them getting on competitive on the gaming scene, though i dont think that is the case. The Nvidia titan card has been kicking ass for awhile...

It certainly isn't because of bicoin. I always tough amd to be undervalued, but that was a personal feeling not based on fundamentals or anything.

Gaming scene as in AMD is the graphics provider for the next gen Xbox/Playstation. That combined market probably outsells their standalone gpu market as far as volume, although the price per unit is significantly lower.

Wasn't there a rumor going around, that intel is/was gonna buy AMD?

If true, that could be the reason.

Don't think the government would allow that. That would give Intel a monopoly on desktop processors.

I just looked it up now.

AMD seems to be turning itself around.

The whole reason behind AMD's existence is the State wanted a second source of x86 CPUs. Intel wasn't really happy when they had to license the rights to x86 fabrication to AMD.

Sorry, should have written "the whole reason behind AMD's legit x86 business existence..."

They had started as a RAM and logic chips company. They did like others and cloned some of Intel chips (8080/8088), tried their own, worked with Zylog as well I think, then got the Intel license (which intel said was good up until the 486 but not Pentium, which lead to litigation and...AMD still makes x86 CPUs).

EDIT: it was founded by a group of Fairchild Semi "expats".

AMD investor here.

Mining has most likely had a VERY small effect on the price of shares, GPU sales have not driven up the stock price. The price increase is mainly due to AMD's new restructuring/strategy looking more and more feasible. AMD is making a shift from the dying CPU market to gaming and is currently expected to have an APU unit in every PS4, Xbox 360, Steambox, and already the WiiU. Another thing that has been driving up the price of AMD is buyout rumors, it is believed that due to AMD's new shifting strategy it would be possible for Intel to buy them out without violating antitrust laws.

But simple short answer, GPU sales are not driving up AMD.

Definitely not because of mining.

No matter the reason for their turnaround, I just hope that they put more of that money into CPU R&D.  We really need more competition in the CPU market.

I agree but unfortunately that won't be the case, they are trying to distance themselves as much as possible from CPU market.

An APU is still a CPU.

They're still acting like cowboys is their problem. Intel is acting like a business (predictable, in a way, boring). When AMD will get that they need to have a stable process (Tick Tock anyone?), and deliver the chips in sufficient qty, maybe we'll be able to say they're finally out of adolescence (for a company founded in the 70's...).

Nothing to do with Bitcoin mining. AMD has some good stuff lining up over the next couple years with their GPUs and I think the markets are finally rewarding their slow turnaround.
