Title: I Hacked Bitcoin
Post by: IHackedBitcoin on May 13, 2013, 10:58:27 PM
MOD EDIT:
Pretty sure this guy is just trolling.  OP if you edit or remove this I'm banning you.

Hello Folks,

I know this is a provoking title. I am working as a researcher at a european university and i have already dedicated many years of my life to revealing insecurities in bitcoin.
My first stept were to solve thy mythos about the fact that nvidia cards are slower than ATI cards due to a missing right rotate function. This is crap resulting from not so good developers: I have showed how to implement sha256 without using right rotations and speeded up nvidia bitcoin mining by factor 3. Additionally an extra speedup has been made by guessing if the hash will be a leading-zero one or not with over 80% probability 5 sha rounds ahead. A very welcome extra speedup.

Enhancing Bitcoin mining was not satisfying me however. I wanted to go more over the top so i started on revealing other security holes.
This for example involved finding low quality transaction signatures with weak random seed values and exploiting the signature algorithm to reveal the private keys via simple XOR operations.

Right now I am working on another attack by revealing bitcoin adresses incl. their private keys. Several "super brains" in here keep telling you that it is almost impossible to guess the right private key because there are as many possibilities as atoms in the universe. Blah blah blah, just some wanna be script kiddies repeating what the read somewere on the IRC channel. Here you get a couple Bitcoin Adresses and their Private Keys that i have found in the last 2 hours. Good collision rate, huh? Eventually we will find an account with several million $$$ in it.

If anyone wants to support my work so i can make it open source (all, also the nvidia miner kernels) feel free to donate to:
NOPE

If you want my hacking ideas and proof of concept scripts, just send me 10 BTC and contact me on PN:

Asking for donations, and asking for 10 BTC to reveal his super-secret hacking methods...

Get the fuck out of here.  If Bitcoin was truly this insecure, you wouldn't be asking for BTC that would be worthless if you were actually cracking private addresses.  This would mean Bitcoin would be tanking soon, to oblivion, and your 10 BTC from every sucker who fell for it would be worth the dirt under your feet.

Lets see a proof of concept.
I give you full authorization to break into the wallet on my phone. Please post my private key.

If you want proof that it is mine. Just ask. I can take a pic with it up on my phone.

Maybe I'm missing something (and admittedly I may be) but what exactly does listing wallet addresses and private keys prove? I can create a bunch of wallets and list their addresses and private keys too. How do we know you didn't create those wallets? It's sort of a which came first, the chicken or the egg thing. If you are able to derive a private key from a wallet address, why are you only wallets that have had ~0.1 BTC or less in them? It seems more likely that you have created those wallets or are randomly generating addresses and then checking to see if they've had activity. In that case, you'll probably find that mining is more lucrative.

Also, if you have improved Nvidia mining by a factor of 3, write a Nvidia miner. There will be a line of people waiting to donate to you then.

It might just prove that there is a sucker born every minute, even on the bitcointalk.org forum.

That is why I asked him to post my private key. It is an address I do not care about. So, lets see if he can do it.

Don't waste the forum's bandwidth, scammer.

How about you sign a message with the private key of one of the top 10 bitcoin balances?

Then we might be inclined to believe you. But then again, if you have access to over 100,000 in BTC - why do you need us to do anything at all?

Title: Re: I Hacked Bitcoin
Post by: milone on May 13, 2013, 11:51:12 PM
If he is just "cracking" brain wallets I have a bitaddress.org file that I modified to check wallet balances and activity, so you can check word lists or randomly generated addresses. When it finds a balance (or activity) it will notify you. It's javascript so not the fastest method, but it works and is all contained in one file. I modified it when someone on reddit posted a challenge to break in and steal 1 BTC from each of their 5 brain wallets that had weak passphrases. I found out about it the day before it ended and didn't end up getting into any of them.

I'll undercut IHackedBitcoin and sell it for the low, low price of a 8 BTC donation.  ;)

Act fast, supplies are limited.

Harder, since as soon as quantum computing becomes a semi-real threat, Bitcoin can & will switch to quantum resistant algos.

How exactly can Bitcoin just "switch algos"? I thought the algorithms weren't able to be changed.

How exactly can Bitcoin just "switch algos"? I thought the algorithms weren't able to be changed.

Nope, the algos are modular; both on the blockchain hashing side (currently 2 cycles of SHA256) and the address keypair side.  The code includes "hooks" that would permit another hashing algo to run alongside (and eventually replace) SHA256.  I'd wager that another algo will be in use alongside SHA256 by 2020, as SHA-2 type algos are not particularly resistant to quantum computing.  Also, the protocol deliberately provides an upgrade path for bitcoin addresses.  That is why all current addresses start with a "1" character, as they are all address type number one.  (there is another address type used only for testing, that starts with an "a" I believe)  Future addresses could use different algos, or have other definitive features that make them incompatible with the current address format; which would call for a new addresss identifier, and thus that first character would be different.  There is already an early proposal to make an address type that would still use the same algo, but use a modified value variable to hold sub-satoshi value sets; as an example.

Wow, here I was thinking that I had a pretty good handle on Bitcoins. Though I still haven't read the whitepaper, and this is a little further on the technical side of things.

Thanks for the info. I'd give you a small tip if I could find an address.

Anyone who is actually stupid enough to reply to that email in the post above can expect a few hundred phishing emails coming their way for the rest of their lives.  Anyone with claims to hack bitcoin should back it up with some real evidence.  Posting several keys isn't evidence.  Theres only one address people care about.

The thing is, he cannot crack an address in specific. He can just randomly generate ones and hopefully stumble upon one with millions of btc (Technically it's possible, but the chance is like winning the lottery a hundred times in a row, multiplied by itself. It's horrendously improbable.)

But OP, good luck with your scam. xD

Well 3 years has gone by since OP posted this thread and we still using Bitcoin securely.  ;D ... Even though this gem has been pulled out of the archives, it is still applicable today to serve as a reminder

to everyone that Bitcoin cannot be hacked.  ;) Yes, services using Bitcoin was hacked, but their weak code has nothing to do with the Bitcoin protocol. The fact remains that nobody has successfully

hacked any private keys generated securely and if someone manages to do that, all technologies including secure sites and credit card tx's will be hacked too, because most technologies use SHA256

{   Secure Hash Algorithm }  ;)
