Yeah been down since most of the dump today.  Usually they are up pretty quick but must be some more serious maintenance this time. check their twitter for news.

Hmm. Not looking good. I think if they are doing just maintenance it should be done by now. Although this is not the first time that we are seeing it, this is the longest I have seen so far. There is a thread saying that is implying that the BTC-e might have been hacked. We don't know yet. But if this is true then, it will sent shockwaves across the community and it might impact the price in a negative way (although the price suddenly down right after BTC-e, maybe just a coincidence). What I don't like is that this is a unscheduled maintenance adding fuel to the already sensitive situation regarding a possible split in Aug 1.

Same here:

Error 522 Ray ID: 38446cf228f3776c • 2017-07-26 03:56:19 UTC
Connection timed out

This is an unusual downtime for btc-e.Usually they are down for just a couple of hours but now its taking too long and im wondering whats the problem on such downtime.Hopefully it wouldnt end their service. ;D

On 072217 this was posted...

"Due to possible risks, from 25.07.2017 to 15.08.2017 we increase the number of confirmations required for Bitcoin deposit from 3 to 6 #btce"

Maybe this supports technical error.

For those without Twitter.

Update2: At the moment, work is underway to restore the service. Approximate terms from 5 to 10 days. Thank you for understanding #btce

That's because Vinnik was arrested in Greece for money laundering. So there  it'll be a long "waiting" period...

How do you know this?

I don't think this address is that of an entity that had it's funds seized by law enforcement though. It looks like they are splitting up their coins, possibly to prepare for an influx of customer withdrawals (and/or to process customer withdrawals).

I had some coins in there, don't remember how much, but some definitely there.  Did not expect that to happen to once a good BTC exchange.

Did not expect that to happen to once a good BTC exchange.

No one really expected this to happen, otherwise people wouldn't leave their millions worth of crypto and fiat funds there. BTC-E was offering quite the bit of privacy people were looking for, but turns out, it came at a very high price. On the other hand, the lack of proper communication from BTC-E's side, zero licenses, in some cases even shady behavior, was something that should have made people move to other exchanges. In some cases exchanges do not deserve a second chance (Bitfinex fits in that category as well), and for that reason people shouldn't put themselves into an unnecessary risky position by making use of whatever platform BTC-E comes up with as alternative. If they ever going to return, withdraw what you can and close the BTC-E chapter for ever.
