Since I'm new to all this, I wonder what makes a good pool to mine in? What pools are you using?

Most pools are similar. The main differences are the fee's and stability of the pool.

I've used deepbit, and currently use BTCGuild. I like BTCGuild, now that they've solved their traffic issue, since they have optional fees. Deepbit is a good backup pool since it's a pretty stable, but they charge a 3% fee.

Best pool is:

P2Pool
FeatherCoin is a Geek
FC Simple Pool

Why? because featercoins are most easy to get compare to lite and bitcoin. And popularity is high.

Get some feathers
