i know that mining is pure luck, but once you can output a certain hashrate it might be considerable, right? does anyone know what hashrate i would need to deliver to find a coin in at least a week? thanks! You need at least ~8-10 ghash for solo mining to become acceptable.

It's all a matter of probability, like buying a lottery ticket. If you buy a million lottery tickets (analogous to a fast cluster), you'll have a much better probability of winning than if you buy one (analogous to a slow machine).
So yes, you need to be in the multi-Ghash/s rate to have a reasonable shot at mining, but nobody can guarantee that you'll find any within any particular timeframe, no matter how much computing power you have.
