As I know, it is a programmed course for converting Ethereum system into PoS(proof of stake) from PoW(proof of work). By continuously making decrease of the mining output.. Today ~ 25 sec block times in about 1 month 35 sec block times another 1.4 month 55 sec block times and then we should fork by then (maybe September). Farms are also expanding at incredible rates to make the difficulty even higher.
