Ok, so I am going to attempt this today and will go through it step by step in this thread. Hopefully more knowledgeable people than myself can help me do this.

So as I understand it, I need to first move my bitcoins from my electrum wallet (EW#1) into another electrum wallet (EW#2). Then I have to find a bitcoin cash compatible wallet and import my private keys from EW#1.

Also, once I have the bitcoin cash, what is the best way to trade it for BTC? Should I just use an exchange and can someone make a suggestion on which exchange is best for an American to use?

And going back to the bitcoin cash compatible wallet, can anyone make a suggestion on which one to use for that? Electron cash seems like the logical option but the other thread says there are some shady activities associated with it, especially if using the binaries, so I will avoid this option. I was thinking about using btc.com as the wallet to claim the BCC. Can anyone comment on whether this is a good choice or not?

Finally, is it safe to transfer my coins from EW#1 to EW#2 now? Asking this in regards to whether the "dust has settled" after the hard fork.

Ok another question. As far as transferring all my bitcoins from EW#1 to EW#2, is it just a matter of sending from EW#1 and receiving at EW#2? Or is this where sweeping private keys comes into play?

You can either send or sweep, either is fine. With electrum is cheaper and probably better to send the coins by hitting "max" first (next to the amounts specified).

Yes use an exchange. Ensure the exchange allows you to deposit and withdraw your BCC. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until that becomes avaliable (I'm not sure who allows this yet though).
Electron cash is fairly shady but if it's your only option then go for it (there are a few other options documented on bitcoincash.org if you want to look at them)? That site will also list the exchanges that will allow you to use bcc on them.

Thanks. I think I'll just send them. I use a cold storage wallet and sweeping looks a bit cumbersome having to export the keys from the offline machine.

As far as the exchange, I would be depositing with BCC and withdrawing with BTC though right?

Hmmm something very strange here.. When I click on "Max" for the amount I want to send, it's topping out at 1.99976402 BTC, so 2 BTC minus the fee. But I have more than 2 BTC in the wallet... So why is it maxing me out at 2?  ???

I think maybe the software electro cash is a scam as I saw my coins and now they disappeared when I turned off the wallet???


Can someone please help me?


Hello I followed this exactly and I did even see 20 BCC in my wallet but was showing a unconfirmed parent warning I closed the wallet and opened it again and the BCC coins disappeared, what can I do, import the keys? or have I been scammed by the software where can I see where the coins were sent too?

Or is there someone sort of delay?

Well there is another thread about the electron cash software and there are definitely some shady things associated with it. That is why I decided to stay away from it altogether!

Update: I've successfully got all my bitcoins out of EW#1 and into EW#2. So now I'm going to import my private keys from EW#1 into a btc.com wallet which supports bitcoin cash and hopefully will be able to claim my bitcoin cash from there.

ok well I have run into an obstacle in getting my EW#1 private keys imported into a bitcoin cash compatible wallet. bitcoincash.org lists the following wallets that support bcc: BitcoinABC, bitcoinclassic, bitcoinunlimited, BXT, Ledger, Trezor, Electron Cash and btc.com The btc.com wallet doesn't allow me to import private keys from another wallet so that is out. Ledger and Trezor are hardware wallets. Electron Cash has been discussed in the other thread and it has some security concerns so that is out. The remaining 4 if I'm not mistaken require me to download the entire blockchain. So do I basically have to do that to be able to import my private keys from my electrum wallet? I'd obviously like to do this as fast as possible. Any ideas?

Is this something to do with the fact there isn't actually a block on the network?
If the block height is 0, it's likely your nodes may be waiting for something (or maybe it's just electron cash)...
Anyway, I've got about 8 hours until the lockdown on my coins from an exchange lasts so I'll see if it's a network problem.

Probably more likely that Electron Cash is not able to support 2FA properly.

BCC transactions are signed in a different way to BTC transactions due to the replay protection. When you use 2FA, it's effectively a multisig that you send to TrustedCoin to sign. They only know BTC so will be signing it as a BTC transaction... so the transaction will be "invalid" on the BCC network, and it will be rejected, hence the error.


If the OP restored using a 2FA seed and disabled the 2FA, I suspect it might be that MultiSig in Electron Cash is broken...

2FA IS a MultiSig... it's a 2-of-3, where you have 1 keys... and TrustedCoin has 1... and the 3rd is "hidden" in your seed. Even if you restore a 2FA from seed and disable the 2FA functionality... it is STILL a 2-of-3 wallet... it's just the restore process puts 2 keys into your wallet, so you can provide 2 signatures and don't need TrustedCoin anymore...

I think all the others require you to have a complete ownload of the blockchain, BitcoinUnlimited i'd suggest is probably the longest running one alng with bitcoinABC - or you could ask for another user to redeem your bitcoin cash for you (make sure they are trusted on this forum).

You can see all wallet supported but i don't guaranteed if you can get your bcc right now since i heard that some wallet is scam and i think better to wait more days before you claim your bcc and if its clarified that the there is a safe wallet to use for bcc and to import private keys. .

Ok waiting appears to be the best option for now. I mean the BCC isn't going anywhere since it's still just there on the blockchain and I own the private keys. I actually don't even have 80 gb of free space to be able to download the blockchain so can't even use those wallets. Also if I'm not mistaken, you can't even trade the BCC at the exchanges yet, though I suspect that should change as time goes by.

If you download a wallet like bitcoinunlimited, you can use the -prune command when you load up the client from the command line (it should use no more than 4gb that way).

You're going to be waiting a while then... either for someone to make another lightweight BCC wallet... or to download the blockchain using BitcoinABC.

Electron Cash can be run from sources if you're concerned about using the binaries. Just goto github (https://github.com/fyookball/electrum), download the full repo using the "clone or download" button, extract the zip and go from there...

The source is fully open and you can view/audit all the changes made since it was forked from the Electrum repo.


Given they're currently mining about 10 blocks a day... a lot smaller than the BTC chain :P

Is there a "safe" way to claim your Bitcoin Cash from Electrum without use of another computer? I only have one computer and it currently has Electrum installed on it.
If I'm understanding things correctly, the safe way to claim BCC involves using another computer and installing Electrum on it too.

Do you have a spare pen drive/hard drive, you can boot electron cash from that?

Download an OS like Ubuntu and boot from that first on the hard drive i'd suggest.

Oracle VirtualBox is free... You can load up a Linux distro in that and then install ElectronCash there. That'll effectively sandbox EC so that it can't see your Electrum install.

You don't need to install Electrum on it... Just create a 2nd wallet in your main OS and Electrum install. Move coins from current wallet to new wallet.

Then use old seed in Electron Cash in virtual machine.

Thought I'd bump this thread to report that I successfully claimed all my bitcoin cash from electrum wallet using Coinomi. If anyone needs detailed instructions with any part of the process, I'll be glad to help here!

BCH getting more and more valuable, and Electrum's best advice so far is empty your current wallet to a new wallet and use seed of old wallet in Electron cash.

Any trustworthy way to extract BCH from current wallet, without needing to essentially close the current Electrum wallet, would be greatly appreciated!

If you don't mind downloading the block chain, you could use bitcoinabc (as many people have used). But you need your private keys instead of seed but then you don't need to empty the electrum wallet really. (But the block chain is about 120GB even for bitcoin cash).

Or get the linlink and instructions to coinomi from faitaccompli.

Hi, before the fork i installed Electrum wallet on my computer and moved my bitcoins into it.
Now that the price of BCC is getting pumped, i'd like to redeem coins on that blockchain, but obviously i want to keep my existing BTC.


Reviewing the post on Electrum's website:

 1. Install Electron Cash on a machine that does not have your
 Electrum wallets.

 2. Wait until the BCC hard fork has taken place, and a few BCC blocks
 have been mined.

 3. Move all your Electrum funds to a new Electrum wallet. This will
 move only your BTC, and not your BCC, because the BCC blockchain has
 replay protection. Wait until the transaction is confirmed.

 4. Enter the seed of your (now empty) old wallet or private keys in
 Electron Cash. Since the BTC have been moved to a new wallet,
 entering your old seed in Electron Cash will not put your BTC funds
 at risk.

Following these 4 easy steps you will be able to access your BCC
without compromising your BTC.

Could that a new wallet on the same computer?
And, why are we doing this anyway? Won't that make the orginal wallet balance be 0?

Well this is essentially what I did, except I used Coinomi instead of Electron Cash. How far along in the process are you? Remember that you have to create a second ELECTRUM wallet first. Move all your coins to the 2nd wallet so your original wallet with all your coins before the fork is empty. Then download Coinomi onto your mobile and follow these easy instructions laid out here:

As far as sweeping addresses, I only had to do 2 and they were the last 2 under the "Used" arrow (in electrum addresses tab)

I can not help you with electron cash as I did not go that route. However, Coinomi was very simple to use. Just a app to download from the app store and then it's fairly simple from there. Just use the link in the post above

The use of a second computer and 2nd Electrum wallet is a security measure to protect your BTC. It isn't strictly required, but is recommended. The idea is that by moving your BTC to a new wallet with new seed/private keys, if the BCH wallet turns out to be "Bad" and it steals your seed or keys, then only your BCH is at risk as your BTC has already been moved. The use of a second computer is also an extra step to protect your wallet file from being stolen.

The same thing can be achieved using VMs or live distro bootable USBs/CDs etc... as mentioned, it's not necessary, just a good idea ;)

And yes, by seed they mean the 12 words

I have read this interesting post, and I say thank you to those who give advice on this tricky subject.

I have one question : can you simply send your BTC to your exchange account (for a while), and then install the BCH wallet (coinomi or electron cash) and proceed with the same instructions to get your BCH credited in your BCH wallet ? ...You could then get your BTC back from the exchange account to your existing PC (or cold) wallet. Am I missing something ?

Is't this simpler and safer ? With a new Electrum wallet, it seems that some people have had somme difficulties with privates keys, etc.. Whereas with the exchange platform, the only risk is that it closes all of a sudden or suspends withdrwals within minutes without warning - not very likely ?
 

Just make sure your exchange account is fully secured and does not have withdrawal limits. Because I remember once a friend sent his coins in a exchange without having a fully verified account and he had to wait for a week to get them back.

There has been some debate about Electron Cash and Coinomi...With the "exchange account method" is one or the other better to use in your opinion ?
And last question; once the BTC would be back in my Electrum wallet, is there any known risk to have both wallets (Electron and Electrum) on the same computer ?

You shouldn't have any issues but make sure you have downloaded latest version of electron cash from their official site.

I have still another question, hoping I'm not bothering you too much. I've read these instructions on this forum:

1.Open up ElectrumCash 2.9.2 (Make sure you have latest version)
2.Click on New/Restore
3.Select wallet with two-factor authentication and click Next
4.Select I already have a seed and click "Next"
5.Enter your Electrum wallet seed and click Next
6.Select disable and click next
7.Enter password and click next and check if it's showing balance and try to spend it.


About item #3 : I think don't have a 2FA on my Electrum wallet - I just enter my complex password (I know, it's not very safe) - , do I have to select wallet with 2FA in this case ?
About item #6 : Since I haven't yet installed Electron Cash, is this instruction step "disable" different if I don't use 2FA ?

No You don't need to select 2FA, you need to select "Standard wallet" in step 3 and it should work for you and yes it will be different,electron won't show you step 6.

@ziggy2: Wait, you're moving your btc from your electrum wallet to an exchange then BACK to your original electrum wallet? Is that smart? Considering you will have exposed your private keys while claiming the bitcoin cash.

That's what I thought I would do, yes. I don't understand what means "exposed your private keys"... Both my Electrum and my Electron Cash wallets "know" my seed, anyway, so I don't understand...
What else could be done ?

You're not moving BTC to "split" your coins... The fork and replay protection had already effectively done that.

You're moving your BTC to protect your BTC from theft should whatever BCH wallet you choose to use turn out to be "bad" and it steals your wallet/seed/private keys...

If you move your BTC to a completely new wallet... Even if ElectronCash then sends your old seed/private keys to the hacker, your BTC is safe as it is in a different seed/private key.

Sending to an exchange will do the same thing, but if you send it back to your old Electrum wallet, you're putting it back on the old seed!

The idea of using a 2nd machine or a VM or live distro CD/USB further increases the security by preventing your BCH wallet from being able to steal your wallet file for new wallet, as it would effectively be on a "separate" device

Yes, make a new wallet on your normal computer.

If it's a large amount of bitcoin, you could always run the separate electrum client on a vps for a fairly low fee (but it should be fairly safe anyway).
