And

b) Which is the safest Multicurrency Wallet (online wallets preffered)

For Single online wallet,

Coinbase for Bitcoin.

For multiple online wallet,
Coinomi for Bitcoin and Litecoin.

I don't recommend online ethereum wallet as they are useless as they can't handle tokens.

"Safest" and "Online" are pretty much mutually exclusive... if you value "safety" for your crypto currencies... don't use online/web wallets. You only need to look at history to see why (Mt. Gox, Bitfinex etc).

For Bitcoin, a good place to start for a wallet is here: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

Personally, I'd recommend Bitcoin Core (yes the initial sync takes a while, but it's worth it. Plus, you can run in pruned mode if hard drive space is an issue)... or Electrum (Lightweight, SPV wallet with an activity developer and active community).

its all so very confusing.

why not make something Simple and Secure, both at the same time.

It would take a long long time for people to accept cryptos.

I tried to create an account at Bitco but hey ....so manys key with PDF file..

I just gave up on opening a bitcoin wallet at least

Terrible experience.

Its ok , Let them not Simplify

Coinbase is simple, and somewhat secure. The only issue with Coinbase is that you don't have access to your private keys, which I personally don't like since it defeats one of the purposes of bitcoin.

"If you don't  control the private keys, you don't have any bitcoin". I suggest these instead:
Windows: Electrum | https://electrum.org
Android: Copay | https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitpay.copay&hl=en
iOS: BreadWallet | https://itunes.apple.com/ph/app/breadwallet-bitcoin-wallet/id885251393?mt=8

Those wallets should be simple enough for casual users.

Also, seems like you quite lack a bit of knowledge on bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general. I suggest doing a bit of reading: www.coindesk.com/information/

Best of luck.

I have been reading about crypto for 3 months now.

I am a photographer.. I know crypto but unlike IT guys I fail to understand the need for complexity in storing coins... buying is simple but the only thing I read online about wallets is "That one fine day a hacker will steal your coins" or "once you lose your password, your money is gone" or "once your computer crashes or you use your phone your money is gone"

With that backdrop, its highly unlikely that a saver who earned his money the hard way, like me, would step into this kind of Fear.

The more I learn the more complex it gets..

see electrum is again "Download" if the computer crashes its gone.

why cant they make web based safe wallets...

Till then I dont see mass adoption for "the fear of losing money, is enough to prevent people from entering this domain" the developers just dont get it.

The common person is not to smart and to top is the volatility of the coin prices.

I want to buy but where in the world is "Safety and Simplicity?

Firstly, you might like to investigate the "Edit" button as well... Multi posting like that is frowned upon.

Secondly, the developers totally understand. It is you that doesn't get it. A lot of people like the "Be your own bank" idea... but dislike the implied "you are now responsible for your own security"... they're "lazy" and just want everything served up on a plate... so they use online (centralised) services where they don't control their private keys... then they moan and whinge like crazy when it all goes wrong and all their coins disappear due to a server hack... or the service changes their terms and conditions and jacks the fees up... or starts demanding AML/KYC identification and blocks their accounts. It happens time and time again... and still people seek the "safety" of online crypto services :-\

For some reason, people these days seem to shun responsibility... it's always "someone elses fault" in today's "class action lawsuit" world...

If you want to use an online service, no one is stopping you... but it carries risk as well... you need to decide what level of risk you're willing to carry... and how you want security and convenience to balance out.

My suggestion if you truly want to embrace crypto: Read, Learn, Be Happy

There is no other safety wallet than using the official wallet of every coins .. but in bitcoin there are many safety place to save your bitcoin electrum bitcoin core and local exchange site here in my country.. But for altcoin much better to use the official wallet just to be safe of your altcoins..
Like in ethereum and litecoin better to use to official wallet for safety of your coins..
If you are looking for multicrypto wallet its not so safe but i heard you can use multicrypto in Jaxx wallet but they are experience of some bugs or issue about the app using the jaxx wallet.
Since you are newbie better to check this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=37.0
To see more wallets available and this one for online wallet https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=222.0

I know this isn't what you've asked but I recently bought a hardware wallet - Trezor
This really is a game changer, as I can safely store all my tokens BTC or ERC20, on one device...that cant be hacked! There are cheaper hardware wallets, Ledger and keepkey... I will never store my tokens any where else.
Nb. I do not work for Trezor, or any hardware wallet ;)

I use Trezor Wallet for BTC, LTC and also for MEW, where I can store my tokens.

It is always good to use hardware and desktop wallet because you have control of private keys for the address you are holding. You can use that wallet for any type of transaction and no one can ban it. But in web wallet you are not the owner to control your address and any time they can ban you account and you will lose all your btc.

If you want a safe cryptocurrency wallet, you should buy a hardware wallet like ledger nano which support multi-currencies and it is safe because it is a hardware wallet and it stores your cryptocurrencies offline so there is no problem and you are hackproof because your cryptocurrencies are offline.

The safest thing is to print your private keys and store the.
(paper wallet). The next best method is a hardware wallet. After that is a newly bought computer disconnected from the internet. I would recommend a local open source wallet. Electrum is okay. I use exodus because of the gui.

It was already stated that offline wallets are the 'safest'. For online safe wallets, I like Exodus. It allows access to private keys, has a sleek UI, and runs well.

For me it would be probably MyEtherWallet because you can't open your wallet if you don't have the Json File and they dont get your and its a self wallet they can't see your wallet.

Yes, using blockchain.info's wallet you have access to your private keys, which is good. Though I wouldn't say it's the best and the safest. Depending on what device your using I would prefer the alternatives, Electrum and Exodus for Windows desktop, Copay and Mycelium for Android, and BreadWallet for iOS. Though depending on how much cryptocurrencies your holding, I would definitely go for buying a Ledger Nano S (https://www.ledgerwallet.com/) or a Trezor  (https://www.razor.com/)as it's alot lot less prono to hacks due to your private keys actually not leaving that device. I suggest investing in one.

How safe is it to send coins based off ETH to an ETH address? Does every coin need to have it's own wallet to be safe? I have spread some money on bittrex and got a dozen or so coins and after lurking for a while think it's best to pull them for a long hold off the exchange.

The best option is to use hardware wallet, because:
1. It is easy to use as online wallet anywhere
2. It's safe to use on compromised pc? connection etc..
3. You can store there all currencies that you like

Do not use online wallets as it is easy to hack and hackers nowadays are very good in this. Listen to advise, hardware it's the same as online only secure way to use cryptocurrency
Best option for today is Ledger wallets. As option you can use KeepKey or Trezor

Welcome on board.

Well, in my experience, i never lost my coins with Blocktrail. It's a multsig wallet. They make 3 keys: 1 backup key, 1 key with Blocktrail, and another storage online (securely, of course). For LTC and ETH i never used online, sorry  :(

Now, for a multicurrency wallet online, i recommend for you coinpayments. "Accept over 65 altcoins now for only 0.50%" I think that can serve for you.

And remember: It's never safe to sleep in cryptoland.

Personally I don't like hardware wallets. We have already seen recently trezor had to patch a problem where the passcode was plainly available for anyone to view. I trust the armory offline wallet on an offline ubuntu laptop that never touches the internet. Just a usb that goes between it and the online armory computer.

Online web-wallets are websites or even online exchanges that allow storage. As I mentioned above, this is the least secure option as it usually involves leaving the management of your private keys to a web server. Web servers are prone to hacking, and users must also trust the online wallet operators. It is however a really convenient way to keep a couple dollars worth of bitcoin online for quick and easy payments. If you have large amounts, then never keep it all in a web-wallet.

Online wallets are generally not safe. Anyway if you wanna use online wallet I suggest you to use blockchain.info. But keep in mind you won't have full control of your private keys and also it doesn't have Litecoin.

Safest options are not online. For this reason I suggest you to use:

- Electrum for Bitcoin
- My Ether Wallet for Ethereum.

Good multicurrency wallets are Waves (google chrome extension) and Coinomi for Android.

Why not? Because it's not as simple as you thinlk. Improving user experience takes a lot of work and people expect to get paid for their efforts. Right now crypto wallets are far better, and far more user friendly than they were a few years ago. You're correct that the average person will not get into crypto until the UX has improved. But you're not the average person. Put in the work and it will begin to make sense to you.

You're correct - the more you learn the more complex it gets. But, I suppose, the same is true with photography.

"Why must I learn about ISO; light apertures; and shutter speed?  it's all so complicated. Why can't you simply point and shoot?

Because the topic is complicated. You need to learn about your subject. It will get more complicated for a while and then it will begin to make sense.  Or you can wait 10 years when the process is mature and user friendly.

My absolute best wallet is IOTA's wallet, once you deposit you battle to get it out. There is alot of issues with it BUT due to this I've been unable to sell my IOTA's which is a very good thing, I bought at $0.31 and is now $4.33 - that is a good wallet (lol)

I'm not worried because I know a better wallet will be released shortly.

MEW is also very good just watch out for phisning scams (slam) I got hacked

Lessons learnt.

I think the first question should be:

- Do you want to store your coins for a long time and don't spend them
- or do you want to trade with or send them to others

Saving long term
Your best option is using cold storage. Simply generate an address (i.e. https://www.bitaddress.org/ (https://www.bitaddress.org/)), transfer your corresponding coins to that address, print your private key to paper, laminate it and store it somewhere safe. Now only you have your keys. Search for "creating cold wallet" to do this the most secure way.

Having those coins at hand
First of, if you want to trade those coins you obviously have the get them on an exchange. Never ever let big amounts of money sit on addresses you don't own. If the exchange gets hacked, goes offline, the wallet is under maintenance, your account gets banned or there are withdrawal restrictions, you won't get your money back. That applies to every online wallet where you don't have the private key for. Online wallets are not safe!
I see two options:
- buy a hardware wallet (around 100$ but quite hassel free and safe)
- download the acording wallet (Problem: not every coin has a lite wallet and therefore you would have to also download the acording blockchain which might be around 20 GB )
With some of the lesser known coins it's hard to find a wallet so you have to store them on an exchange.
