Title: What will happen to bitcoin when it gets cold?
Post by: Mfister on June 21, 2011, 05:22:07 PM
I'm making a prediction that bitcoin's going to drop when it gets cold again.  I can't imagine what some of you are going through during the summer, but when winter rolls around, you won't even have to turn on the heat if you got enough mining rigs.

Interesting theory for an overall outlook.  I like it.   My original reply had something to do with my Bitcoins are so cold they could cut through glass, but, I like this theory.

:)
I smiled.

I was actually serious... my heat cost like $400 a month in oil during the coldest months...

Haha a great prediction but I don't think that will make a large enough impact on the Bitcoin. Serious miners will mine no matter what season it is, even if it's freaking 40 Celsius in their house due to the heat of the rigs they will still keep mining :P. You could also make a prediction that the Bitcoin will go down in the summer because you could make your rigs run on solar energy costing you nothing :P.

This isn't even a joke, my room is already the hottest in the house from the pure amount of electronics. Even though most aren't on. I dont even know why its always so hot. My windows are open and my fan is on. Still sucks in here. When I mine.... forget about it.

you can earn more money. because you heat with mining hardware.

Not quite 40C in my house (~104F for my fellow non-metric Americans) though it IS that hot outside (I live in Las Vegas).

Air conditioning plus two portable window-mounted AC units running at 100% 24/7 can keep my house at 74F/23C at night but during the day it sometimes hits 85F/30C. Not dangerous by any means but certainly uncomfortable. I long for winter.

Same here, I live in the East Coast and it been around 80-100 :S (30-40). Been living in my basement :P.

I'm not sure we need to wait until winter. If people start finding alternative cooling methods, this could happen sooner. My mining rig is a practically a space heater, so I moved it into the basement, where I don't need to run AC. Then I cranked up the overclocking.

Yeah, in my flat, I depend on good old 1960s electric heating during the winter. If it was winte rnow, I would break even with my rig much faster... Heating costs me about 200€ during the cold months. Would have been nice, if someone hab told me about bitcoin half a year ago.

Yeah I've been looking into buying another couple of rigs around winter time, putting them into the attic then fitting some basic tubing to vent the heat to other areas of the house. Should cancel out the electricity bill they run up hopefully  :)

Move to Wisconsin.... 17°C on first day of Summer... awesome. Turned off heat today but PC room is nice and balmy. I can almost FEEL my hashrate when I enter the room :-)

I'm so glad I live in an area where the electricity is very cheap AND we can use evaporative coolers effectively. I've got a desk full of GPUs being cooled by a blower and a water pump bolted to the roof of the house. :)

I put my mining rigs into the crawl space under my house to avoid the air conditioning overhead.  Here in Austin the outdoor summer temperature is over 100 degree F, but the rigs enjoy a steady 86 degree F environment.  In the winter they will keep the water pipes under the house from freezing!

Let's move to Chile and start up a server farm.  :D
