Title: Anyone willing to sell this newbie some BTCs?
Post by: dobber on May 16, 2013, 01:33:13 PM
I have been following bitcoin development and this forum on and off, and have finally decided to dip my toes into bitcoin mining with the current advent of dedicated ASIC chips.

I will be pulling my resources together and putting an order for 16 Avalon chips from the batch 3 group buy:

Anyone willing to sell me some BTCs to get me started? I would like to pay using PayPal in USD. Looks like I am going to need at least 1.376 BTC to place the order.

My PayPal account is verified. If you need any other IDs or documentation from me, I will quite happy to provide them.

Thanks!

Nobody here likes Paypal, because it's easy to scam the people selling BTC.

For a very good explanation of why you should not use Paypal to perform transactions using BTC, see this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=164254.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=164254.0).

Well, there are some success stories eg.

and from what I read so far, PayPal "gift" is actually quite secure for the seller and could actually be disadvantageous to the buyer if the seller is a scammer.

Anyone trying Ripple?  I signed up for a new account but I'm struggling to figure out how to get any balance to start working it.  Supposedly they are giving away some XRPs to bitcoin users but I haven't figure that out yet.

You'll have more luck with http://bitcoin-otc.com : create an IRC account, authenticate with a GPG key, use the WoT to select a reputable seller.
Or you could try https://localbitcoins.com .

"Quite secure" is quite wrong. Even if the payment is sent as a "gift", the buyer can still do the following to defraud the seller:
 - if using a link account, chargeback through their bank
 - if using a linked credit card, chargeback through the card issuer
 - enter a note on the transfer that payment is for virtual goods

If you'd like to sell me 10 BTC for spot, I can demonstrate the above.

Paypal: I'd sell only .15BTC at a time at a steep premium
Dwolla: I'd be willing to do it all at once for spot.
Western Union: If you want to eat fees, I'd also do this at spot.

PM if interested.  There are probably other veteran members that can help you out.  I'm just itching to do my first P2P sale outside of localbitcoins or friends and family.  The real value of Bitcoin rests in the ability of people that do not know one another to transact with one another.
