Title: Scammed 16 coins taken
Post by: ClimbHigh91 on August 08, 2017, 03:12:25 AM
So I fucked up big time. I bought 16 bitcoins back in 2011 and have had them stored all these years. When the bch split happened I got online and was searching for how to claim them, I followed a tutorial video, it has since been removed, and like a complete idiot I gave my recovery phrase to the website blockchain-bitcoininvestment.info. Believe me I now know how stupid that was. They drained me immediately. All my funds were sent to this address 1Be7Ej9WA8ioDuqrRKCaGcCBM6Uu3Mci53. I am aware that there really isnt anything that can be done. I just hope others dont make the same mistake I did, It seriously sucks. Be careful out there one fucking mistake can have some really shitty results

This is the second of such a story I've heard about today alone!

These guys have scored nearly 66BTC so far, what a racket!

So you need to tell us, why on earth did you think you should give someone your recovery passphrase? Seriously. What was it about their talk that made you believe it was safe?

You'll help others by sharing. And most importantly, I'm sorry to hear about your predicament. It's awful.

That's terrible, sorry to hear. There was a thread earlier where someone lost 40+ bitcoins from a fake electrum wallet website. Scammers are making a killing

Sorry for your loss. This is why people need to be very careful and weigh up the risks with splitting your coins. Is it worth it? I successfully split mine so if you really want your BCH then follow instructions in my previous postings. Otherwise sit on your hands and wait for easier method.

I think this Newbie might be poaching us. He says "the video's shut down" but then leaves the exact URL to get there? Hell...these scams are ruthless and I bet most of these posts about it are bullshit too. You go to their website, they send you a virus, get your passwords or log keystrokes, etc. That's the real scam.

Too many of these reports with the same bullshit, unbelievable details.

So sad to hear that thing, there was posted here days ago just like what happened to you dude, he follows youtube instruction just what you did every steps that were instructed but sadly after a while his money in his wallet gone in a slap.
Email is one factor why you where get your money lost, like sending you something and ask you to install in your laptop or computers then from that, your account opened at that moment will be cracked even your passcode, that thing happened to me before, but not money stolen but accounts.

Its so annoying to see something like this not because of the money lost but because of the ignorance displayed by users of their scamming services. You dont know the way to the forum before you patronize their services but come back after you have been scammed thinking someone will do magic when the forum itself has actually made it available on a step by step basis on how to redeem your bch to the extent of emptying it first before you start anything.

I can't believe it, this is Second post that has come up since yesterday, maybe there will be more but my second post and this is dam pissing off, 16 btc that's such a huge amount of money, as of now there is nothing can be done, but I feel if you file a complaint with your authorities they will be able to trace it back to IP address, and then you can file a complaint with the embassy that's the only thing though it won't yield much results as there are no law but it's worth a shot.

If these hackers are claiming to offer a BTC/Bcash split and got are given the private key/seed. Why are they only stealing BTC and not the Bcash ?

According to the BCash block explorer they didn't transfer any of the BCash only the BTC?

This doesn't add up.

It's cool OP, you've realised your mistake and that you were naive to give away your recovery phrase.

In future, you'd be best off checking:

-Bitcoin.org (they warned against scams related to BCH as well)
-The posts of theymos (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=35) on this forum, if he's made any
-Mainstream news sites such as Coindesk
-Your wallet's suggestions

Ideally check several sources to make sure that the information has not been altered.

Anyway, if that was all your coins, that's so shit.  I hope you've got a few coins left.  It's also a shame that people will be patronising you with pages and pages of pointlessly added posts saying that they "don't think it's a good idea" to share your private keys, but I guess they keep this thread nice and visible.

Hmmm....  that looks interesting.
Probably they also don't trust BitCH coin's replay protection and they want to empty the BTC from every address first, before going after BitCH?

Not sure though.

People will always look for new ideas to scam others and naive guys will fall for it. It's inevitable.
Judging by their balance you weren't the only one OP. They made a lot of money from this. It's sad that being a crook pays off like that.

First rule of Bitcoin: keep your private keys safe offline and never share your public key or wallet passphrase. Protect it like it were your balls! :D

Really? I have been trying trying to figure out if they took those as well. I have the bitcoin abc download running on my computer hoping I can still cross reference my keys and claim those. Do you think it will still work? I actually had that method downloading before I fell for the scam but it's been taking multiple days to download. It would be a small light at the end of the tunnel to be able to claim those

I, too, am skeptical about these claims. 16 BTC is a lot to trust to a web site with a suspicious URL when great resources like BitcoinTalk are available.

Maybe I've been watching too many episodes of American Greed on CNBC... :)

Unfortunately you are probably not the only one. People are just not careful enough and very eager to get their money so often they don't pay attention to details. You probably haven't checked that domain. Always check everything twice and don't give your confidential and financial data to no one.

Yeah.... this is the second thread about blockchain-bitcoininvestment.info which I have seen here in Bitcointalk. A few days back I saw another thread from a guy who lost similar amounts of Bitcoins. A lot of hackers are taking advantage of the BTC-BCH split. There is no easy way to claim your BCH coins, and some people are losing their patience and falling in to traps.

There website had the exact layout of the blockchain website. Even had links taking you to the blockchain wallet. There was user reviews on the tutorial video I watched talking about this method and others all giving it good feedback all must have been part of the scam.  I truly wasnt thinking when i gave them the recovery phrase. This was one of the first bitcoin transactions I have done though I have owned them for a long time. I should have done alot more research since I owned quite a bit.

Unfortunately no, theres nothing the law can be done. The only thing that can be done is trying to find out who registered the bogus website. Even that might not lead to anywhere. Because you find that website owner, then what? Bitcoin transactions are irreversable. But lets hear what others have to say.

If you google the btc address, you will see a few threads on different sites (also bitcointalk) with people who have also lost btc to this scam.
Just fyi.

ps; dont forget, there are people around here (lot's actually) who have lost tens, hundreds, thousands of btc.
they have been hacked, lost wallets, broken hardware, cheated by exchanges, invested in ico scam etc etc.
Although this is rough, you are definitely not alone.

2 persons with similar story and problem, never trust anyone with your bitcoin you are the only one that needs to know your private key and password or just don't let anyone know that you have bitcoin and I think that is the most safest way to surely secure it and make your self anonymous to everyone that you encounter online.

This is by far the worst story I've heard getting scammed. Isn't there a way to hope they don't mix the coins and send somewhere like poloniex or so and maybe recover their true identity then? Would poloniex for example even give out such an info though...

I doubt anyone sends nearly a 1/4 million to any wallet site in one guy. Certainly nobody would try split all the coins at once.

Sounds like nonsense.

I haven't been able to locate the transaction online going to his account. On my account transactions it shows my funds being sent to to the ID I posted. Anyone know if there is any possibility of still claiming the bch since the bit coin was in in the account at the time of the split? Or do the coins have still be there?

Your recovery phrase is all you have that makes you secure and you just gave it away. (sighs)
They have been active lately ever since bitcoin holders are getting greedy to have their BCC for free.
You have done the mistake then move on from this and next time you will know what to do.
But this is a large mistake. I might get a heart attack if this happens to me.
Let us all be careful now for those who wants their BCC traded for bitcoin. Just let it be and dont bite that promotion.

Up to some extent, I do agree with you. The security provided by Bitcoin is far better than that of any other digital currency. The high level standard security of Bitcoins is posing a challenge to hackers. Maybe this is the reason they are very much interested in removing Bitcoins from the wallets as compared to any other digital currency. As far as Bitcoin cash is concerned, they are trash in front of bitcoin. So it is quite useless to hack Bitcoin cash.

Anyone know if the scammers haven't claimed my bit coin cash is there anyway that I can still claim them? I tried coinomi wallet sweep all it came back with was that there weren't any funds in the account. Will I have any better luck using a full node like bitcoin abc?  The funds were there at the time of the split and I would assume that is what matters not wether they are currently there? Ridiculously made a fool of everyone and that's insane.
I mean who, even in the name of Jesus Christ, would give them their recovery phrase or anything? Didn't you go through some research about BCH before taking such a dangerous step which proved to be the most stupid mistake that you have had ever committed?
16 coins? And you are not even that regretful? You lost 53k USD and that's something kinda serious and we should ask devs to create something like a reversal strategy or something which only they could run, at least to save everyone from such happenings as such way could also help out with hacks as well as thefts. As well, I am amazed to see such a big amount of 66 BTC, those guys must be partying hard atm.

Another person who got been victimized again those scammers out there. Sorry for your loss and 16 btc isnt really a joke amount already and i do feel what you feel bro. If you do convert it on the current price its already a lot and losing them in an instant we can really call ourselves stupid. This is why we should really easily entrust our keys on anyone and regarding with the guide there are lots of ways on how to claim bch just on the forum itself theres alreayd a guide which been provided by theymos.

Dude that is a huge tell when the domain even sounds shady... "blockchain-bitcoininvestment.info".
Ugh, I feel for you. Someone I know lost over 20 Bitcoin so far getting scammed.
It sucks, but all we can do is move forward.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Man, you lost 16 BTC and you are still caring about your BCH? Insane, dude.

When you fuck up this bad you just have to suck it up and take it like a man. The scammers are pieces of shit for stealing them but I blame myself for giving them away. The bitcoins are gone if there was anything I could do about that I would but there may still be something I can do about the 8,000 in bch that's out there. It's a lot of money but the sky is still blue, the grass is still green and the beer is still cold

Check https://blockchair.com/bitcoin-cash/blocks and http://blockdozer.com/insight/ and see if they still have any of your BCash.

IF they do then send it somewhere else immediately.

Who knows... maybe Bcash will take over Bitcoin and you might get your money back... don't count on it though.

I'm sorry for the OP. I wish this never happened to you. Hopefully Karma hits the scammer.

I would just like to say, good job. That was the best thing you ever did. What I always say whenever I am on the internet is

"Trust nobody!"

There are 4 more scammers after every legit person. That's for sure. Scammers are lazy as mofos that just try to steal from people.
And because there are more lazy people compared to those that work hard, we see more scammers.

I just found a thread on the Beginner's & Help Forum that's stating "If you export your private keys you can access your Bitcoin Cash". And there are responses that claim interest and thanks for the info....scam city!

Watch out folks. There's a lot of bad stuff going on!

The best bet you can do is go after the domain provider and check the whois of the site you have just laid your money to. It might not be the brightest idea at all but it's a start at least. Contact their provider and inform them that  you lost 50 grand from the said website that is associated with them. If they don't agree, threaten them to press legal charges as it was clearly some form of money laundering done on their service.

Good luck on your journey. Not much you can do about recovering it via BCH.

Sorry for your lost. I feel bad about what happened. I hope those scammers would get what they deserve, sooner or later. All they do is steal from other people who worked hard to earn those amounts of money. Leave the job to karma, dude

Hopefully this serves as a lesson to all of us. There are many ways one could have secured his bitcoin before the split, like reading the guidelines in here, but not from some youtube videos from unreliable sources. But since it’s already happened and nothing you can do to get your coins back, the best thing to do right now is move on and let this serve as a bitter pill to swallow and a reminder on how to to do things in a secured way.

Dear OP, which wallet were you using? I am just wondering, have you tried retrieving your Bitcoin Cash? Please check, hopefully the scammer didnt take it despite him/her having your private keys. Then atleast you can cashout that. I know it wont bring your bitcoins back, I am just hoping you atleast get some little money back.

Export your private keys (or seed/backup phrase) into an "Electron Cash" wallet (http://electroncash.org) or a full node which supports Bitcoin Cash such as Bitcoin ABC.  You can check that you have the correct links from the official Bitcoin Cash page, bitcoincash.org (http://bitcoincash.org).

You should then be able to send to an exchange such as bittrex.com (http://bittrex.com) from that wallet.

NOTE: please check exactly what I am saying by reading the Electrum guide to claiming (https://electrum.org/bcc2.txt) and theymos' guide (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2059111.msg20544752#msg20544752).

It is recommended that you use a separate computer for Electron Cash because the binaries are signed by anonymous developers.

If your backup phrase/seed is from a TREZOR or Ledger hardware wallet, you should be able to spend directly from your wallet.

Sorry for your loss.

Thats very sad to hear. You have saved it carefully for almost six years and have lost to some one when bitcoin's price is at ATH.For what reason you gave your recovery phrase?I could remember a person who had lost almost 40 BTC last week by downloading a wallet from wrong website Electrum cash.org instead of downloading from official electrum website.Scams are increasing nowadays very high with very high increase in bitcoin's price. So bitcoin community must be aware of these scams and must save their hard earned money safely.

Dude I feel so bad for you. My family lost over 20 Bitcoins from scams and it sucks to think about how much money that is. What I recommend is if you have more money wait until this bubble we are in pops and then go all-in and buy more than you had before so that you will not look back in regret about this for the rest of your life. All the best to you, man.
