Title: Mining rig shuts off after 1-2 hours
Post by: onlinehandelen on August 08, 2017, 08:06:28 AM
Hi guys,

What do I possibly do wrong if my rig shuts down or freezes every 1-2 hours? PSU is 850w gold+ and draw is 300 from wall, only using 4gb ram, virtual memory set? or What is the cause of this?

Helpful replies can donate btc.

More information will be needed. Like GPU, power usage of GPU, stability of GPU, etc. Sounds like a unstable GPU or damaged GPU.

Hi Regulater, thanks for replying.

Specs are as following:

Motherboard: Z170 M7 Gaming
CPU: Intel Pentium G4400 Silverlake
PSU: ThermalTake 850w Gold+
RAM: Kingston Fury HyperX 4GB DDR4
SSD: Kingston 120GB
GPU: 5x 1050ti brand: Galax
Power usage is 250-325w from the wall measured with kill-a-what meter for total rig. (seems low for 5gpu, i expect it to be 5x70 =350 minimum)

I have the feeling one card is faulty indeed. Can you provide more information after this? Kind regards, D

Does definitely sound like a faulty card. Load up MSI Afterburner or a GPU Monitor of any type and watch the power usage. Usually you can find an unstable card by the power usage making constant jumps that are higher than 3+ per ever update. 1050 TI are around 80W TDP so you should be seeing atleast 400 W minimum or depending on how far undervolted. Card instability will cause a freeze, or crash.

Hi,

I just loaded MSI afterburner but cannot detect anything weird. The watt usage is just to low, even dropping below 200w sometimes, there must be something wrong. I am mining in a hot country (Thailand), You think I should buy a cpu cooler as cpu reaches up to 75 degrees? (Only problem i can detect so far is cpu temperature).

If you have a spare box fan, I'd just take it and point it at the rig. (Unless your CPU doesn't even have the stock cooler on it, in which case you should get a CPU cooler.) 75C is on the hot side for a CPU to be running 24/7, but shouldn't be the source of your problems. (Assuming it really isn't reaching far past 75C.)

What kind of risers are you using? Are they powered risers, and have you tested all of them?

To try and isolate where the problem is, I would go ahead and boot the rig with a single card and try mining, checking the power usage once it's been pegged for some time. Pair each riser with a card and repeat the process for each card/riser pair. If the rig's total power consumption varies significantly with one card (with riser), that is likely your faulty card/riser pair, and you can do another test to see if replacing that riser allows the card itself to function properly.

One last thing, do any of your Galax cards have a 6 pin PCIe connector? Most 1050ti cards do not have them, so I'd like to know.

Install cooler in cpu.

have you tried figuring out what makes it stop? if you're mining with claymore, have you tried checking out the logs? Also if you're on windows, download a software called WhoCrashed, it may be able to help you figure out what stops your rig.

Thanks all for replies. I installed a cpu cooler and updated drivers, running now for 9 hours straight. Tomorrow I will conclude if its fixed.

Yeah, even a 54W Pentium needs some kind of cooler, especially when run 24/7. A passive cooler with just a large heatsink could probably do the trick if you have other fans nearby. If you were running it with no cooler at all, I'm surprised it only hit 75C.

Thanks for the reply. I installed a d92 master cooler now, cpu temp dropping to 40-50 degrees again, rig running stable now.
