Title: What is a "Bitcoin Supernode"?
Post by: Este Nuno on May 16, 2013, 06:26:35 PM
I think I understand individuals running the software and being a node on the network relaying transactions and such.

But google seems to fail me when searching for specifics on what exactly a "Bitcoin Supernode" is.

It's when you believe yourself to be an extremely important person, then completely fuck up a simple get-together screaming bloody murder, fleeing from a luxury hotel because you believe they are out to kill you when they turn off your water after you've made a complete mess of the place and deny paying your bills, then keep mumbling about how you and your friends are armed and trained as soldiers and eventually get checked into a mental instituation. That's when you're a bitcoin supernode.

I'm not even joking. I wish I was, but I'm not.

I have recently been following that little saga as well. Which made me curious as to whether there was some substance behind this whole "Supernode" thing. Like maybe there's a technical reason behind it like someone who runs a server which provides the equivilent of x number of normal nodes running on the network. Or if it was just some imagined title like you seem to be suggesting.

If it's not a technical thing, what is the intended point of the title? What would a "Supernode" do?

It a very confusing. Because many users of bitcoin are nodes on the network. And throwing around this "Supernode" word seems to imply something related to that.

It's a way to extract money from people who don't know what a Bitcoin Supernode is, but think that they would like to.

I think it's a combination of owning > 100 BTC
0.0th class supernode = BTC1M
0.5th class supernode = BTC100,000
1.0st class supernode = BTC10,000
1.5th class supernode = BTC3,000
2.0nd class supernode = BTC1,000
2.5th class supernode = BTC300
3.0th class supernode = BTC100

and living (or maybe more precise, appear to be living) a luxurious lifestyle. It also helps if you can boast about a burn rate of ~200k USD per month.

I'm not sure if this is part of being a supernode, but the inventor of the term claims to have "unlimited money":

You do realize you are laughing/yelling at a TV, right? Like its entertainment, not so much educational?

Some speculate that in the future, it will take a beefy server with a fast internet connection to run a well-connected bitcoin node. Rather than running their own nodes, most users will push their transactions to these "supernodes" as well as poll the blockchain from them. Thus, users won't have to store the blockchain or maintain a node. One could say Blockchain.info is a supernode in practice.

Do you mean you realle never saw Stargate?

Because pyramids are landing bases for alien spaceships! http://www.se51.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/stargateRaHatak.jpg

Note: the Aliens guy is not from Stargate

That file name makes no sense. That's a Cheops class vessel, not a Ha'tak.

True that, but it is a high quality screen of the movie, so it is good  :D

This sounds interesting.

Is there anywhere to read up on these predictions?

Just check the bandwidth required to relay the current transactions and scale it to much more  :D

So true. Then add the part a out sending Bitcoins to random anon users and expect them to send it back to you and they don't.

ok people have had their laugh's but now for the proper answer

a supernode is a node (persons computer) that is always on and always connecting to a large amount of other nodes. it is used as a reliable way to get multiple connections quickly.

normally only certain reputable people that dedicate a client to being on all the time get given the supernode title, its not about money or fame. but more so for being a reputable IP to connect to that is always available and always connected to a bunch of other nodes.
