Title: Advertising your wallet
Post by: occasms on May 17, 2013, 12:00:12 PM
I see a lot of wallet ID's in signatures. Are people doing this in the random hope that someone will just desire to fire some BTC into it for no reason? Does that ever happen?

Yes.

Does that ever happen?

Yes.  If you say something extremely intelligent or extremely helpful, once in a while someone will toss a few dozen millibitcoins to you as a way of saying thanks.

Does that convince you to do it yourself?

There are useless noobs that don't give nothing to the community and they expect us to send 1 BTC to their feathercoin wallet.

I believe a lot of people also do it to simply show their recent transactions. If they have a tonne of recent transactions with large amounts of Bitcoin's moving, they may be seen as "richer" I guess.

Go to a gaming forum and you'll see people bragging about their computers or the games they play. Go to a hosting forum and you'll see people linking to their hosting sites. This is a bitcoin forum so you see bitcoin addresses. Seems normal to me.

But yeah I don't think anyone gets any coins for posting here.

Do which? Put an address in my signature, or pay an occasional tip?

I've both paid and received tips for very helpful posts.

The average post here is just barely above useless drivel, I'm sure none of those ever get any coins for their post.  As it is, the amount that is received or given is usually more of a friendly way to say thank you than an actual payment.  I've probably received 4 or 5 tips after a year of posting, and given out about the same amount.  At pennies worth of bitcoin per tip, nobody is earning a useful income from it.
