Because for mining these cards show the best performance. You can research the best cards for mining as price-performance ratio.

There's not too many reviews on the topic with latest soft/hardware. I'd suggest grabbing a few different types of adapters, and power options for your External GPU on the Pi, and just test away. In this case, use a gpu rig. Follow the advise of many but if you are totally in to it, try. I'm pretty sure you'll just waste your time on this. GPU rig is a good investment given you have good price of electricity. You can invest time on your project but you will go nowhere, best option is to invest on a mining rig.

Larger ASICs like Antminers tend to have all the functionality built in as I understand it, but the Pi is good for running things like Gridseeds or stick miners.
