Title: Google bought a D-wave quantum computer
Post by: Blueberry408 on May 17, 2013, 11:32:07 PM
:D Quantum computing sounds exciting... the press release said today 20,000 times faster than current supercomputers. That's fast, and nice to know more than one or two customers are able to purchase, install, and begin programming them THIS YEAR.

The implications for the future of cryptocurrency are clear-- quantum computers are legendary for cryptology computations.

Whether or not BTC is going to be the future of payment itself is, to me, less clear, but still more interesting now that alternative information processing devices are considered a logical investment to some very logical customers.

At first, programmers need to figure out how to utilize the physics to accelerate computation. It's a different paradigm, and the gamble is how talented will we be at riding the quantum wave.

For certain values of 'computer'

Yeah, from what I understand they have a computer running on it in a classical emulation mode, and the main goal is to study the quantum effects, which D-wave stood to prove the device actually exhibited in the first place, and optimize hence. It's not even for sure than any quantum computing can actually be done on this chip, but once people get a feel for how to ride the wave, so to speak....uh....
Basically, assembly language will become vastly more dimensional than it is now on classical devices. It's RISC and CISC at the same time, a veritable paradox. No surprise it's installed in the SF Bay Area.

Plus. It looks like a TARDIS.

These should be available for pre-order from BFL soon.
pre order specs:
Quantum Mini™
  • Powered by USB
  • 10 THash/s

after 8 months of delay:
Quantum Mini™
  • Powered by 60 MW class 3 thorium reactor (power adapter included)
  • 10.5 THash/s

No way, cause if they don't make their energy target of fitting it on a usb they will give 1 million bitcoins to charity
