That's some serious hash power that came online.  it was under 10 Thash last time I looked.  Blocks are coming at the rate of 13.5 an hour.

That's really strange. The 7 day average is between 7 and 10 thash/s.

Who has a mining cluster worth 3,000 ghash/s or nearly the entire size of deepbit (the largest pool in all of bitcoin mining)
Why did it only come online in the last 12 hours, instantly?

Is this one of those bumps caused by a difficulty increase?

I just noticed this too.  Look at this screenshot:

Thats 18 blocks in the past hour by my count. What the heck is going on?

well, 6 of these are from btcguild at 2.3Thash/s, so they were very lucky.

Yeah, variance is variance, and luck is luck --

But I've NEVER seen the figures show 14 Thash/s.

There HAS to be some more power coming online --

i know what WILL happen:

difficulty will increase at a rapid pace, far outweighing what BTC's trade for. people will be in the red when the electric bill comes in, and decide to sell off the hardware.

then:
a) miners will buy the hardware and put it back online. causing the big fish to eat all the little ones.
b) people will ignore the hardware sales due to the decreased profits, difficulty will slow, mining will be "profitable", allowing more little guys to join with a meager investment with long-term return.

if we do not see large jumps in BTC value in the next couple of months, mining will be a rather risky investment for anyone but only the most powerful operations.

Maybe it is just randomness, time will tell.  That is some odd clustering of times the blocks were found, 6 in 6 minutes, a dry spell of 15 minutes then 7 in one 10 minute interval.  Never a dull moment in bitcoinland.

Yeah, BTCGuild got very lucky. But we were coming from a very unlucky rally, so its only fair.

Well, I play the stock market, and so monitor the activities of companies like NetApp [NTAP] and Rackspace Hosting [RAX].  Several of these companies are currently selling massive amounts of new server farm hardware, mostly to other companies that want to be in the cloud computing market.  Since CPU miners use 95% to 100% of CPU cycles at a low priority, and will still allow other software to run without much difficulty, a CPU miner app is ideal for testing & burn-in of newly installed cloud servers.  If I were on the installation crew, and there was no rule against it, I would run every newly assembled rack for 24-48 hours as a CPU miner.  If I could get permission, I would even schedule entire rooms of servers to be run for 24-48 hours in order to verify power use and cooling resources.  Some server farms are large.  Imagine a warehouse full of racks, all packed with blade server boxes.   If I could control one of the Google or Amazon facilities for a week, then I would likely never need work again. ("Lobster or steak?  Or both?  Yes, I think we'll have both.")

One never knows when a crappy service job might just turn into a million dollar opportunity.

CIA is helping out with their computational power of about 4000 Ghashs/s.
It's just about 25% of the calculationspeed they could spend.
And all Americans pay for the electricity costs. h3h3.
Btw. They've caused the incident on Mt.Gox, too.

cul8er.

Maybe it's a joke. Maybe!

actually just the opposite.

Anyway, please stop these freak out threads. Hash rate "dropped" down to 11THash agan, or a better explanation, it was never much hgher to begin with.
