Title: Bitcoin Conference Europe 2013
Post by: amonymous on May 18, 2013, 12:21:30 PM
Hi all,

Wanted to pitch the idea of a European conference to you guys in the hope of getting some support.

I've been working on conferences for the past couple years and have connections in the industry to attempt to pull it off, with some help.

Was thinking about making an EU conference towards the middle of fall (September/October) in the Netherlands, which has already shown a big following and support for BTC.

Considering the success and viability of the American Conference, I wanted to gauge interest in a European one.

Yep, I've seen this.

I'm envisioning a conference less about social change, and more about economic change and the future of bitcoin and online payment systems.

Additionally, I think I'd like to disassociate from the occupy movement and focus more on just bitcoin and it's future.

I'd agree with you, a conference about creating new business with Bitcoin, not a bunch of whinging socialists moaning how bad business is.

wow thats pretty shortsighted but i must agree with you that focussing on the pro's for business and consumer is the way to go. Not lecturing people about how bad our current financial system is. In my experience, people just arent interested.

Funny how americans always call everyone (who they dont agree with) a socialist...

Agreed, hence the direction of this conference.

There is an undeniable benefit of using bitcoin, due to its nature as a decentralized currency. That's the utility of it to campaigns like the Occupy Movement and privacy enthusiasts.

However, even more so are the benefits of using bitcoin due to its lack of fees, ease of use, and (continuing) international acceptance.

That's what I'm aiming to show.

Setting up the website over the next few days.

If someone wants to give a hand, that would be great too. Any help to make this happen will certainly be appreciated.

I'll come if I can speak, and I'll only speak if I'm able to do so while wearing a giant alpaca costume with "Look at my horse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pLWt7xPCfM)" playing in the background.

Hi guys,

Set up a placeholder for the event and for information regarding the event.

The site was made by me in the last two hours, so I know it needs a lot of work.

http://www.theconference.eu

I haven't yet decided how to price this out, and any input would be welcome. I know there are some brilliant people on this forum.

Also, if people would like to speak, or participate, feel free to get in touch. All help is appreciated.

Message me. We need some comedic breaks in the conference, and I think a giant alpaca costume would do the trick.

Great idea - a Bitcoin conference based on reality and focusing on the business side without the philosophizing and extreme outliers.

Please keep me informed - Amsterdam in the autumn seems like an easily reachable spot for many in Europe.

Hi all,

Quick update:

There's been some interest from speakers, sponsors and corporate displays at the conference which is encouraging and it looks like this conference is coming along so far.

So far, we've confirmed an app company called Doubledutch (http://www.doubledutch.me) to manage the event and provide the software and app functionality. As well as an amazing bitcointalk member who is an expert on setting up audio/visual for the event.

We still have a long way to go.

I wanted to gauge the price that people would be willing to pay to attend the conference:

I'm trying to make this conference as transparent as possible (while still making it economically sound for the team), so I wanted to pitch the question to you guys:

The one in San Jose was 2.5BTC or $250 if I recall correctly. Understandably, your budget would be dependant on the calibre of speakers. Assuming they were prominent and could add some value to you, would you be willing to pay this amount or should it be higher/lower?

This is a great idea. We need something in Europe like the conference that just wrapped up in San Jose - focused on tech, business, and regulation.

I'd really appreciate an equivalent of this late US conference in EU.

That's the plan.

We're on track to include business, technology, and bitcoins.

The holy trinity :)

I think you should include a couple people on the legal/regulation/political side as well.

Anyhow I am based in Sweden at the moment for my MS, if you need help for... project management, talking to people, sales/marketing/bizdev  ;D

I would also suggest getting in touch with the Bitcoin Foundation. Even if they don't host the event as they did in San Jose, they might be willing to provide some sort of logistical/planning support.

Hey Maaku,

Although the Bitcoin Foundation's combined assets far exceed our own, our concept for this particular hybrid market/tradeshow/conference needs considerable creative license and we are skeptical about involving any organizations of any kind at the organization and funding level, and equally squimish of political connotations.

Nevertheless, anyone and everyone can be involved who feels compelled to support this non-profit movement. We're still in our early stages, so any support is appreciated. Send me a message if you feel like you want to get involved. We have pretty spreadsheets and if you're in Amsterdam, I'll buy you a coffee. Promise.

Great initiative. I'll second the motion for a setup (in regards to the subjects covered) like the conference in San Jose.

To give one answer to this question: I expect this conference to be on a smaller scale than the one in San Jose, which means it would also be a lower price.
Note that the San Jose conference also had a lot of sponsoring going on, so if you don't manage to get some of that, I think you'll run into trouble collecting enough funds.

Good luck organising it! I'll be attending if you manage to pull it off!

There will be quite a big one in Vienna 1-3 November.

The unSYSTEM meeting is very different in scope and purpose from the business-oriented Bitcoin 2013 conference in San Jose. Hence this thread.
