Title: WARNING - Dumb speculation mistake in all coins
Post by: patroncito on August 16, 2017, 08:07:14 PM
Thinking that these coins are 'stocks' is a dumb mistake. The market cap speculation is not valid in this market because you don't need to calculate a "company valuation'". You don't have to compare a 'market value' with a 'book value" because it is not a company. Therefore, any coin can be worth even 1 million (regardless of supply) if people are willing to buy it at that price. There is no intrinsic value and that is why any price will be valid.

The following is an example of dumb statement:....BTC or ETH (or whatever) will never be $500'000 because the market cap will be..........bla bla bla bla yadda yadda yadda.

...so what??. It can be worth 5 million dollars a coin and what? There is no book value of a company. A coin market cap is not tied to anything. WAKE UP. This is the main reason any of these coins can go to 1 million or whatever number at ANY TIME

I understand its all about demand and supply but still there is correlation between market cap and prices. There should be. Rare things worth more as always.

Rare things worth more as always only their rareness depends on something logical, you can create a token with a supply of 20 or 50, but it does not make it valuable just as it is rare.

That is my exact sentiment. To disregard the market cap is a huge mistake and completely without logic.

A building, equipment, land can easily be done by eth or bitcoin foundation but that will government force to put rules and regulation for every coins which against the main idea so it is your own risk or be lifted behind .

LOL. You are just making yourself look even more retarded.

You are missing the most basic concept of economics. A market cap is not determined based upon the valuation of a company or asset owned by an entitity. A market cap is determined based upon how many units of something exist, and how much each unit is worth. The "worth" is determined by how much someone is willing to pay for it. So if people are buying Sia (as an example) for $2/ea then the total market cap is $57,332,810,178 (2*28,666,405,089). With this particular example, you would have to be a moron to pay $2 for SC because there is so much of it -- hence nobody would pay that.

No matter how you slice it, SC could not be worth $2 a coin (at least in the near future) -- because it's total market cap value would be worth twice of what ETH is & just 23 billion less than BTC. SC would have to gain a lot of "value" before that would ever happen. Once again, value would be how much the community agrees to pay (based upon actual purchases) for each unit. When someone decides on a purchase, they always compare one like-thing to another. In crypto you would have to convince someone that SC had a worth/value of twice what ETH is worth.

To summarize, if you ignore market caps, and buy a bunch of SC hoping it will be worth $2 in the near future, then you sir, are a total friken retard. This concept applies to any crypto coin/asset btw.

You are right in saying you can never know, because the value of a coin is based on hype, but to not look at the market cap is irresponsible. Like others have posted. Certain coins only have so much potential to increase based on comparing the market cap to other more popular/higher potential coins.

You should calm down with your name calling. Your grammar is horrible and the only one who looks like an idiot is.....

The following is an example of dumb statement:....BTC or ETH (or whatever) will never be $500'000 because the market cap will be..........bla bla bla bla yadda yadda yadda.

their reasons may be wrong but their conclusion is correct. these coins can not go that high at all. but even if we ignore all the other reasons there is still one big reason why they can not:

simply because people think about market cap that way!
for example when the ETH pumpers used the market cap as their advertising technique they can't now take it away. the same people who don't understand market cap and fell for their advertising techniques are not (with the same mindset) are thinking it can not go high because it will be too big and simply because of that they will dump it.

I can't believe you're still talking ... lol. Literally everything you invest in is "only backed for the number of shares x price and that's it."

If you invest in Google by buying Google stock, you own a certain number of shares that are worth a certain price. That price is adjusted based on perceived value. It's not like you are buying one of their computers or office chairs just because you invested in a physical company. The stocks themselves work just like cryptocurrencies and market caps. The company stock value is based upon the perceived value (cost someone will pay) x the number of shares that exist = market cap.

Short of buying and holding precious metals, or physical real estate, all investments are essentially backed by nothing. Even fiat government currency has no protected value -- For instances, the USD used to be backed by gold; the amount of paper currency used to be restricted to the amount of gold held in the Federal Reserve. Now USD paper money is backed by nothing. It only holds value because people think it holds value. Just like cryptos.

But I know you are just going to ignore everything being stated by me and everyone else and just call people names. That's cool.  ::)

Exactly, percieved value is everything. As long as someone is selling at a price others are willing to pay, the value is real. If demand grows, so does the price. If demand drops, the price goes down also. Market cap moves accordingly as an indicator of total value. If everybody wanted to cash out at the same time, the resulting cashout would be a lot less than the original market cap as price adjusts almost by each sale.

before, good projects / coins received acknowledgements and value increase. but now, profit taking groups are now rampant and trying to create chaos in the market, by pumping and dumping and more shitty ICOs. Though, we need to adapt on this situations, that is why in my own opinion, BTC is the best investment so far and nothing else.

No one hava making some arguments related on this matter and who the hell those people who said that cryptocurrencies are considered as "stocks"? I bet no one do really treat on this way and do say such thing. I cant think on a reason why would people do think that cryptos are considered as stocks? and also marketcap is just the total not totally affecting on how a certain coin would grow because the thing do really affects here is the demand and supply of such coin.
