Title: Travelling to India
Post by: 01BTC10 on May 18, 2013, 11:25:19 PM
I would like to spend 6 months in India near the Himalayas.

Any suggestions where I should go? Cheap cost of living and good Internet connection is a must.

Do you think the Manali area is a good place to spend 6 months?

Manali you may not  have  a very  good  internet  connection.  but  you can make  do with  a  slow  connection.
Darjeeling  is another  good  option , internet  connection  is not much of a problem there.  September  is always  the best time  to  go there.

Thanks I will read on Darjeeling.

You do get internet connections in Manali although not very stable.

Although I have been unable to find Manali on the localbitcoins map, I am sure that you will find BTC acceptance in no time.

Especially in places like Parvati valley, which is chock with people from around the world.

And of course, they have a darn good reason to use BTC as well and I do hope that you find some :)

You should see Dharmshala, Dalhousie for sure.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalhousie,_India

Also at anytime you want to convert your coins for INR, contact us :)

As far as internet speed concerns, you will not get great speeds but you can get decent speeds with idea 3G offerings ( I use them personally while I am travelling and they have decent coverage and speed ). I am not sure if Idea 3G coverage is there in Dharmshala or Dalhousie

I will search a bit and let you know.

( PS : I am going to have a long vacation in Dalhousie in early 2014 :) )

Thanks,

Come to Bengal, the Darjeeling and Siliguri area is best if you wanna be near or IN the Himalaya's

And the 8 hour long train ride from Siliguri to Darjeeling, jumping off to drink water from mountain streams, etc.
Roadside momo shops, cute north east indian girls, etc

Darj is an awesome place. I would love to retire there.

Why not kashmire?

Kashmire is surely most beautiful place on earth, but it has disturbed political, military environment.

Here is why they do that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_Kashmiri_descent_from_lost_tribes_of_Israel

Had read about this a long time ago, but never heard of a first hand experience.

LOL but no!

They do it cuz they are mostly Muslim. You will see more flags of Pakistan their than flags of India (no joke). Also shockingly too many posters of Osama.

More speculation than anything else, but maybe be because anyone living there may find Israel or US to be a bit better than the political conditions of either Pakistan or India. Atleast from what they have faced up north.
The Pakistan army is portrayed by media to be more aggressive than ours, which may explain the flags bit. We do have a tough military system, but forgiving leaders as well.

Nope, not been to Kashmir and not from Israel. Just a text book awkward troll :D

Benson  which  part  of the  world  are  you living  in, our  gov  forgiving . arrrrrr.... NOT.

Well regarding  the   problems   with Kashmir is the religious  extremist  there, the  terror  groups, corrupt  cops,  self  centered  government  policies.

once upon a  time  Kashmir  was a  beautiful  place until  a  bunch of   politicians  from  both countries   decided to  fuck  it  up.

regarding  the  problem  you  faced  being  called a  Israeli, well that is  fairly common  through  Muslim areas, they all hate the  Israeli, so  they  go  about  asking   every  god  dam  foreigner if they are  from Israel, which in  my opinion is a  fucking  idiotic  thing  to  do .  and if the  Guide  did  that to you then it  was   a  real  bad  thing  that  guide did.

Next time  get a  reliable  guide,  may be a  government  one.

He was apointed by the govt. We were days in on a trek and yes i wondered if we were going to end up dead.

hum......   well i would  atleast  suggest  you to  report  that   guide  to the  touristic authority,  they can  at least  do  some thing  about  that . what  has  happened can  be  undone  but  atleast  informing  that government  branch  of the incident  will be a  better  option.

Well  next  time  you  want to  go  trekking go  to  sikkim, or  even  better,  Bhutan you  cant  beat  the   trekking  routs and  fly fishing   spots there,  awsom.

Why didn't you start chanting the name of your actual country? May be I'm prejudiced but when I tell them where I'm from everybody loves it and is instantly friendly. My country is so harmless ;)

Why not kashmire?

Because its KASHMIR not KASHMIRE :P

And you really wont want to leave Kashmir once you go there that place is serenely beautiful. Dont give any heed to the rumors about terrorism our Armies have got the place more secured than Obama's house.

To be honest the best parts of Kashmir are now occupied illegaly by pakistan and China.. the so called 'Azad Kashmir' is truly beautiful.

Well that is bullshit, Speculation, nothing else, India has more muslims than all of pakistan. All the kashmiris I know are TRUE INDIANS and they hate and despise the Pakis and Chinese influence in the region.

But take a note, by pakis and chinese influence I meant the military influence, people there hate ALL KINDS of military doesnt matter which country they belong to, but if you ask ANYONE there about which country their loyalty lies to, which is their motherland, they will say INDIA.

Doodh mangoge, toh kheer denge, kashmir mangoge to CHEEEEEEEEEER denge ;D

The rest of India has similar sentiments towards Kashmiris, the only reason why our government hasnt taken any steps into reclaiming the freedom of the occupied territory's occupant is because the militaristic campaign would simply shed more blood, and to be honest we are NOT PREPARED to go on a full scale war with China ..

We do have a tough military system, but forgiving leaders as well.

We DO have a strong military to take on Pak, but our current leaders lack the strong mentality and a spine, that Indira gandhi had.

Sorry do not agree with this. I have been there and can confirm that mentality of those people are more towards Pakistan than India. But this is true for Kashmir only. Jammu is much more Indian.
