Title: Buy a 7870 or 7970? Post by: guitarplinker on May 20, 2013, 12:11:21 AM Hey everyone, here's my current mining rig:
i7 2600k MSI Z68 MA-ED55 6GB RAM Radeon 7850 750W PSU I have found a 7870 used for sale for $160, or a 7970 for sale for $300. I'm hoping I can bump the price down $25-$40, but let's use the original prices I stated. Which card would you get for dedicated mining? The reason I'm looking at that 7870 is because it would be able to crossfire with my 7850, and when I decide to sell this computer might be a plus just because the computer will have more performance and won't have mis-matched non crossfireable cards. Should I stay away from both cards and wait for ASICs? The only reason I would rather get a GPU is because of it's resale value compared to an ASIC. Title: Re: Buy a 7870 or 7970? Also where are you getting a 7970 for $300? the best price I have found is $368.27 used on amazon.. -Wasted Title: Re: Buy a 7870 or 7970? I decided to not get either though, just because of the model of card, the cooler on it, and I could get a new 7970 for about the same price if I sold the free games that came with it, but with a warranty as well, and my choice of brand. Also where are you getting a 7970 for $300? the best price I have found is $368.27 used on amazon.. -Wasted Title: Re: Buy a 7870 or 7970? Or 7950 or 7970. Title: Re: Buy a 7870 or 7970? Post by: bcpokey on May 21, 2013, 07:39:54 AM I'm just going to come out and say it. You won't get a 7970 for $300, even after MIR and game sell.
That said, this is probably your best deal right now http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-DisplayPort-PCI-Express-Graphics-21196-00-20G/dp/B00BXVFM3K/ref=zg_tr_tab_pd_bsnr_1?t=slickdeals&tag=slickdeals&ascsubtag=j4klHsHpEeKAPhIkcGOq0Arqk4_O3EZ3_0_0_0 $269.99 after rebate, + 4 games. If you sell the games for $50 or so that's close to the $200 mark. $200 for ~550 - 600MH/sec, not bad. Title: Re: Buy a 7870 or 7970? Post by: kinitex on May 22, 2013, 11:08:58 AM 7970 for sure
Title: Re: Buy a 7870 or 7970? Post by: pstudart on May 22, 2013, 02:31:40 PM When buying GPU mining equipment you need to consider Litecoin, because eventually you will move there. So if you get 7970 stay away from mhz edition. I Recommend gigabyte 7950.

Title: Re: Buy a 7870 or 7970? Post by: Tywill on May 23, 2013, 04:11:10 AM I have several 7970s and 2 7950s. so far no issues with the 7970s but one of my 7950s kept getting "SICK" then "DEAD" and eventually would give my rig a weird blue screen (not BSoD) I guess I am going to have to RMA it. The other 7950 works fine just at about -200 KH/s then the 7970s. Also, I have the GHz edition 7970s so I am curious about why those aren't advised (other than that they are more expensive)
